Mystery Seat Malfunction

Here’s one that no pro or street mechanic can solve, and I fear my life may be at stake. Started as a simple problem years back…. I’d shut down the 95 Mark VIII and the drivers seat would sometimes be in an a more upright position when I returned. No problem, old car,.. a bit of dementia, I’d just re-adjust.
But one day, over a year ago, pre-dawn, I stopped at a 7-11 on my way to work, don’t recall if I shut it down or not, did my shopping and when I returned, I fell back, full onto the back seat. It’s not that I touched the back of the seat, it just wasn’t there. It was totally limp, no engagement at all. Tried the seat motors, heard them run but no engagement, no matter the seat position. I went back home and propped it up sufficiently to ensure a safe ride to work. Same day,.. took it to my mechanic and he said,” get a new seat.” About three days later, I pulled out the artificial support to examine the seat mechanics,……….. and it was engaged and working fine, never failed again.
Since that time,.. it’s been working fine, but I keep a cooler behind the drivers seat, just to support me in case of failure while driving. Yes some TWO YEARS now. Anybody offer any help on this mystery? Wherever you drive, a seat falling straight back while driving can be fatal. My commute has me on 10 lane highways doing 80 MPH (as everybody else)in rush hour traffic. A failure like that can take out 40 innocent drivers, my arse included. How can I trust that seat again?
I suspect it may only occur at shutdown, but I can’t chance that. Anybody have any suggestions? I’ll weld if it’s necessary.
