o2 sensors

RE: o2 sensors

Just did it two weeks ago, it's not hard, but it's a pain in the ass. Depending on how old your car is it may not be rusted in (update your profile with the year of your car and stuff). Mine weren't rusted but they wouldn't budge without heat. I would suggest going to your local auto zone and getting the o2 removal tool (rental). Also have an assortment of 1/2 inch and 3/8 inch adapters, extensions, breaker bars, and ratchets. Having a set of crows feet is always good too, I used those on the passenger o2.

Firts I tried to soak them in liquid wrench and get them off, didn't work. Completely exploded two 3/8 universals (1/2 wouldn't fit up there). Get a torch, I used my portable mapp gas torch and heat up the bottom of the sensor and the bung. Get it really hot. Make sure you have your tools put together accordingly BEFORE you heat it other wise you will get burned. Once it's hot put on the the socket carefully and it should come off pretty easily. Remember this is all from the bottom of the car. Space is tight, if you don't have relitevly thin hands get somone to help you who does. It's tight around the o2, but VERY tight up at the plugs. Good luck!!!

RE: o2 sensors

that pretty much sums it up. although you may be able to avoid a torch by soaking it in pb blaster or liquid wrench for a few days prior to attempting to remove the o2's. if you drive the car though that might not help much. Mine came off with an open-end wrench, but i had the exhaust sitting on the floor of my garage and i soaked them in pb blaster for a week or so before trying to remove them.

RE: o2 sensors

yea having the exhaust on the floor would definately help. I tried soaking them for about 15 hours before I attempted to remove them. The damn hardened removal socket from auto zone was bending, then the univerals started to explode and hit me. God damn watch out for exploding univerals, talk about a lump!!!

RE: o2 sensors

That describes the situation fairly accurately. Driver's side is the problem, passenger side has enough clearance. Soak, heat, soak, heat, repeat often. Forget the O2 socket, crows foot or a open end wrench, they're not strong enough. You might get away with a bent, long handle box end wrench with a presuader pipe. I did this: Cut off the top of the O2 sensors using a One Sided Hacksaw thing. If you can get 1/3 the way through w/o quiting, you can bust the rest off using some pliers. A short 6 point hex socket will now fit over it, and using a swivel pull bar and persuader pipe, you can wail on it. Don't forget lots of anti-seize compound when you re-install.. this will only happen one time! IMO, the real PITA is replacing that leaking EGR Tube. I could write a book on that one.

Why the heck do they make 12 point sockets anyway???

RE: o2 sensors

with one heating with the torch mine came off very easily. Probably onlt 30 ft lbs of force. Before I put enough to shatter two 3/8 universals. Heat is definately key.
