Painting an LSC

How much does a dealership "quality" paint job run? I'm looking for a second gen LSC in black but I cannot find any good ones. I have found some great deals on second gens lsc's but in different colors. I want to know if it would be worth painting,or just keep on searching? http://memimage.cardomain.com/member_images/4/web/280000-280999/280293_34.jpg[i/]______________________Mark of the Cobra______________________ 94 Mark VIIIDavid J

Black is easy. Assuming no body work, it should run about $600.

RE: Painting an LSC

I was quoted $3500 to $5000.

I would keep looking or change your tastes in colors.

To repaint a black car with black paint?!?

Both 1 day paint and body and Maaco quoted me $600 for my black 96.

And yes, that is for a dealer quality paint job...mind you the black Marks only have black paint on them...no clear coats or pearl coats.

You missed his point.

He wants to repaint a non black mark 8 to black.

No clear coat ? huh ?

No paint will compare in quality and longevity to original paint.

Keep looking bud.

RE: Painting an LSC

I had a feeling I should just keep on looking, but a "JP" green second gen lsc for 9,000 w/ 35,000 miles is just so hard to pass.

I still want to buy it.

RE: Painting an LSC

Changing colors is no easy task. My quote was painting the blue car blue, perhaps with more pearl/metallic and lots of clearcoat. That left the door jambs, engine compartment, trunk, etc... out of the equation.

Another consideration, around where I live there was only 1 shop with facilities to 'oven bake' the finish. Most other shops will tell you modern paints do not require such.

Unless you want to spend major time and/or money, I would keep looking. ;)

RE: Painting an LSC

Maaco is far from dealer quality.

If you get a Maaco paint job, you need to do all the prep work yourself before hand. Have it taped off, filled, sanded, and primered when you drop it off, and plan to wet sand and rub out when you get it back. And make sure they do a base / clear paint job.

No way you're getting dealer quality in any color for $600. The shop i used on my black '97 would probably charge in the area of $1200 for a full paint job, in black, and that still wouldn't quite be dealer quality. Figure at least $2500 for a GOOD paint job, with no body work other than some small dings or dents, and no rust repair.

Actually Maaco is working hard to refine their image. Representatives at Carlisle were there to tout to car show affecionados that they too can do 'dealer quality' work on restoration and show vehicles. But the price was far more than $600 for a complete repaint. ;)

Ahhhh...now I get it. You're right, changing colors is not worth it. The car would have to be torn apart.

And as for dealer quality paint, you can get better than dealer quality. There are some expensive two part paint processes out there (epoxy, etc.) that are nearly invincible. Acid, fire...nothing damages it; and the color will NEVER fade - however color selection is limited and there wouldn't be any "pearlescent" colors like on luxury cars. The only problem is finding someone who will do it. The EPA doesn't like it, and the painter has to wear a class A environmental suit when he applies the paint. My grandfather used to do it back in the day, then stopped because of the hassle. I probably won't be able to find anyone in CA who will do it.

RE: Painting an LSC

Just to add to this thread. All Mark VIIIa had clear coats no matter what color it was. Yes, even the dreaded black that seems to fade all so often.

Oh...didn't know that. Why do they put a clear coat on a black car?

RE: Painting an LSC

All,

I hate to rain on anybody's parade , but I have two original Black Marks that do not have clear coat ! The 1997 LSC has clear coat on the front bumper cover , but not the sheet metal ! All experts at reading Lincoln Literature are welcome to look at and test the cars !

Sincerely,
Sonny

Could it have been a repair?

RE: Painting an LSC

I think Sonny was trying to make a funny...

They all came with clearcoat. The dark ones that saw a lot of sun, probably don't have much of it left.

My '97 had the CC fading on the roof. So i had it repainted.
