painting interior panels

hi,

i have already gotten a few tips on how i should go about painting some trim panels on my mark. the rubberized coating is peeling, so its time for a re-do. im pretty sure i have the idea on how to strip the rubberized coating off the trim panels by using oven cleaner. then sand with 800 grit, and paint.

the thing is how do i go about painting the "RUBBER" passenger air bag. looks like some people have had luck with doing it.

heres the concept...

RE: painting interior panels

take a look at my webpage from my sig, i just took it out and took it to my shop and they had no problems. even though the airbag is rubber, the paint has never cracked or peeled. i don't know if it has that rubberized stuff on it, i never bothered to check, but like i said, the paint is fine. everything else i did take the stuff off and sanded down to 1500 grit. that was before I learned the over cleaner trick, grr.

thank you. ur just the guy i wanted to hear from. you have the car ive been admiring. i ended up going to a auto paint place, and they recommended a paint that would take care of everything. they also gave me a paint chip book to take home and decide what i liked. i think im going to go with a dark grey mettallic. the dark gray to keep it kinda/sorta how it was, and the mettallic just for an extra flare.

thank you.

I'm doing this same thing to my 94 mark. I know about the oven cleaner but i thought it would hurt the plastic? So i have ben doing it the hard way with a knife and scraping the rubber "paint" off. I have a gray interior with some stock black parts. The parts that were gray are going to be silver and the black parts are metallic black. I'm just using duplicolor truck/van/SUV primer, paint, and clear. So for its coming out pretty good. I have also taken the blue light covers and tint off of the dash lights that i have taken off so far to it has white lights in the dash. I think that looks a lot cleaner.

Ohh wow, that does look sweet. I havent seen it since you switched it. Did you pull your pieces you painted off the rear panels, and then painted? or had them mask it off? I pulled mine off and broke the cheap plastic studs. Ill have to get replacements for mine or use adhesive to reinstall mine when i get painted. Your interior looks sweet!

My interior guy said to clean the part with solvent cleaner with clean wipe rags, then use "Bulldog Adhesion Promoter" spray can. Then paint as normal using interior paint. I had some factory Ivory mixed up at car paint dealer and having him spray my panels with his paint gun after i prep and mask them off for him. Thats how im doing mine.

Thanks!! I pulled the pieces out, and it was a PITA, most of the studs did break off, so mine is more or less glued on.

What type of adhesive did you use to glue them back on? As ill be re-assembling mine soon. I still have some of the plastic studs, but 3-4 broke off while twisting off the fake aluminum nuts on backside of panel.
