Removing Exhaust System Insulators

Is there any magic procedure needed to remove these insulators? If you have never seen them, they are hard rubber spacers that connect between two metal rods. Usually the upper rod, connected to the car frame, is bolted on. These are no a brainer – they can be unbolted. But some, especially those on the mufflers, are wielded to metal at both ends. You have pull the rods from the insulator (hander) holes.

Does anybody know how a muffler shop handles these hangers? Oh sure, you can cut them off, but that is not right -- they are reusable.

Not sure. I always have to ask my dad with his gorilla hands to take them off for me. He uses brute strength.

Spray them with WD or other lubricant. Then pry them off. They will come off too easy.

Common sense > brute strength

RE: Removing Exhaust System Insulators

Our shop guys simply use one of them 3 foot long orange handle Snap-On 'screwdrivers'(a.k.a. prybars) between the hangers(like the diagonal in "Z") and simply pry them off.

Mechanical Advantage > Common Sense > Brute Strength

lol :D

Haha, not the case if they were never removed before. Not everyone takes their exhaust down every weekend JP ...:D

Of course, but his gorilla hands come in handy for all sorts of other things where common sense offers no advantage.

Everybody who shakes his hand says it feels like squeezing a 16 oz sirloin steak. And you do not want to get into a hand squeezing contest with him. After he let's you futily squeeze his limp hand for a minute or so, he says, "Are you ready?" When you fearfully nod your head, he squeezes so hard that your knuckles fold over in two rows of two and your hand goes numb for five to ten minutes.

RE: Removing Exhaust System Insulators

I try the WD-40 and pry method. Hopefully, there is enough room to get something in there and pry.

Thanks guys!
