Shorted Cigarette lighter

Now you may not think that's a big deal until to you want to do more with it than light cig's which I haven't done in 35 yrs. But if you want to enjoy one o-them new fangled 30-40 dollar CD players that work offen the cassette in your mk8 or plug in your cell phone charger, well....you see my problem. So my question is how in the bloomin *&(##@ do you get the front cig lighter out? so you can check the wiring to it? More than my fuse's are blown because this thing is so concealed.

Thanks.

RE: Shorted Cigarette lighter

You'll need to take out the center console to get to the underside of it. That means removing the trim ring around the shifter, which requires carefully prying out the part with the rear window defrost button on it. Then remove whatever nuts/bolts you see that appear to hold the console in. There are also two bolts inside the storage compartment at the bottom, that need to be removed. I believe all are torx. I can't say for sure every step of the process, you may have to kinda figure it out as you go, but be careful. If you break something, chances are it's REAL expensive. But i've had mine out without any major trouble.

On my 93 you do not have to remove teh entire console, just the trim around the shifter.

Remove the heater control trim piece by gently prying it outwards. You might want to use a towel to protect your trim.

Then remove the two bolts (9/32), and pull up. The back part just snaps in.

You can see from the pics that the lighter is part of the shifter trim panel - at least on a gen 1 it is. This takes all of about 2 minutes to accomplish.

They are pretty simple to fix. Once you gain access to it, you can test for voltage and figure out the problem. You could install an additional "outlet" elsewhere or replace the existing one. I had to do this on my girlfriend's truck. I also had a problem with the one in my car. I can't remember exactly what was wrong but it was a simple thing to take apart and diagnose.

RE: Shorted Cigarette lighter

You guys do realize that there is another cigarette lighter in the center console facing the rear passengers right? I don't know if they are tied to the same circuit, but if not you can just use that one until you get the other one fixed. Assuming it's a blown fuse. If it's a loose wire then it should not be a problem. Just a thought
