Universal Muffler replacement

Went to the shop the other day and they quoted me on how much a exhaust would be for my car. 416.00 was the damage and this would be leaving all three cats on the car and just replacing the two mufflers with some 50 series flowmasters plus some pipe, of course muffler price was included in that. He said just doing that would give me some good sound but nothing to load, which I responded that is what I wanted. I wanted to buy my mufflers separate and not necessarily flowmasters. Does anyone know anything about Dynomax or Magnaflow? I have also been looking a some dual outlet tips from Hooker.

I would just run straight pipes instead of the stock muffers. The sound is still pretty quiet.

I would not go with flowmasters since they rust and are generally of a bad quality.

I have 3 2.5" Magnaflows on mine.. quiet until you really get on it.
The center one acts like an X-Pipe.

Well the thing is some ppl like one brand other love the other. You will find it very hard to find someone with just dynomax mufflers... if you are just doing mufflers you should go with magnaflow... if you HAVE to have a muffler on there... but I'd recommend a muffler less setup. Hell just tell the shop to chop em off and take it for a spin see if you like it... or chop it off yourself and if you don't like the sound take in and have them weld on some muffs.

If you're down the whole exhaust system... i have heard good magnaflow and dynomax system so it is up to you.

I agree, just chop off the stock mufflers before you head to the exhaust shop. If you like the sound, have them weld straight pipes on so you dont get exhaust in the cabin. If you dont like it put on mufflers. I think you will like the straight pipe, i love how it sounds with no mufflers! Oh yeah, make sure to leave a window down if you chop off the mufflers or you might fall asleep while driving:eek:

Its safe as long as you have a window down for fresh air. Thats why i said before you go to the muffler shop because you will only have to do it that one time, and if you like it just run the straight pipe when you get to the shop. Either way, you need pipes or mufflers that exit the vehicle. When you have the exhaust end under the car you run the risk of having exhaust fumes entering the trunk and or cab of the car.

I might go for that, I'll have to hear it though. Still wanting some info on mufflers so I can get all my options. How about Flowtech?

I just happened to notice that you live in Fulton, MO. If you ever go west to Springfield MO, you can have a listen to my car, it is Magnaflow equipped. Also Junkman just chopped his mufflers off, and he lives here too. I think his sounds pretty good and I was surprised at how good the car sounds with some simple sawzall surgery.

well if it wont sound loud until i get on it i will chop my rear mufflers off. i do not have a resonator though. will it make a big difference?

I'm down in that area very often but I might do that. Is there ever any type of meets or car shows in MO you guys go to or know of? I know this is a little off topic but just thought I would ask.

416.00 was the damage .

Damn! I need to open up an exhaust shop and start ripping people off too.

I talked to my friends at my local exhaust shop and they pay 40 bucks each for the flows. So they are charging you 380 to cut off the muffs, add about 3 feet of pipe to each side and put some $16/each tips on. Sounds like you're getting a good deal, not! :)

When I first got my Mark, I punched out the 3rd cat, removed the resonator, and straight pipe'd the muffs, it sounded AWESOME and it only cost me 40 bucks. I would suggest that you cut off the muffs and if you don't like it, go put some Magnaflows on it, DO NOT put flows unless you like the sound of a Harley without baffles.

The problem is find an exhaust shop that will actually gut an exhaust system like that. I don't have the knowledge or that equipment to do it myself. Or else I would gut that third cat.

Gutting means take a long metal rod and punch through the cat with a big metal mallot doesn't take much skill really. "So simple a caveman can do it"

Honestly.....I gutting the 3rd cat isn't going to make a huge difference. Just get a sawzall and chop your muffs off! You won't be disappointed.
