UTC Fuel Cells-Powered Car Fills Up at Nation's First ChevronTexaco Hydrogen Fueling Station
Friday February 18, 11:59 am ET

CHINO, Calif., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- UTC Fuel Cells helped reach a major transportation milestone today when a car it powers filled up at the nation's first ChevronTexaco hydrogen fueling station. The station, located here at the Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center, was funded in part by the planned $1.2 billion U.S. Department of Energy Hydrogen Research Initiative to demonstrate and validate safe and practical hydrogen technologies in real world settings.
The new, limited-access station is designed to fuel a fleet of up to five UTC Fuel Cells' equipped demonstration vehicles. At today's grand opening ceremony, racing legend Mario Andretti drove a Hyundai Tucson, equipped with a UTC Fuel Cells' 80-kilowatt, all-weather proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell power plant, to the new hydrogen fueling dispenser.

"The opening of this hydrogen fueling station is a significant step in moving fuel cell powered cars from the testing stage to regular use by the general population," said Jan van Dokkum, president of United Technologies Corp.'s UTC Power, parent of UTC Fuel Cells. "Hydrogen-powered fuel cells offer a reliable, environmentally friendly energy source and have the potential to revolutionize the transportation industry in the coming decade." Later this year, UTC Fuel Cells will deliver power plants for four zero emission buses to two California transportation companies.

UTC Fuel Cells is among 100 partner companies teamed with 30 lead organizations that will receive about $190 million from the U.S. Department of Energy to develop hydrogen and fuel cell technology. The program is a public- private cost-sharing partnership that spans five years. UTC will supply fuel cells for a fleet of 32 Hyundai Tucson sport utility vehicles during the project with ChevronTexaco and Hyundai.

"UTC is committed to advancing fuel cell technology for automobiles, buses, on-site power generation and even the NASA space program," van Dokkum added. UTC Power is a proven provider of clean power solutions for more than 40 years. UTC Fuel Cells offers a range of products that support commercial, transportation and space applications.

Based in Hartford, Conn., United Technologies Corp., (NYSE: UTX - News) is a diversified company that provides a broad range of high technology products and support services to the building systems and aerospace industries through its seven companies: Otis Elevator, Carrier heating and air conditioning, Chubb security, UTC Power, Pratt & Whitney jet engines, Hamilton Sundstrand aerospace systems and Sikorsky helicopters.
