98' Cobra Intake Manifold

it might be worthwhile to consider that many people, including myself, are inept at best when navigating this "information superhighway"

Trust me I know, heck it took me like 17 tries to figure out HOW to use the stupid search function. Seems like everything I try to search for has only 3 letter words, lol.

Fred, dont sweat J.. feel free to ask ANY questions.
The only dumb question is the one you dont ask.

You knew what I meant. :D

No harm no foul J. The only analogy I can feel even remotely confident about using to describe the Mark VIII frenzy that has overtaken me (Ladies, PLEASE excuse me, I assure you nothing derogatory is meant by the forthcoming statement) is that this Mark is like new *****. I switched from the old one (mustang) who was young, brash, loud , unrefined, yet so much fun. This new girl I have, this beautiful Mark VIII, has all of the appeal of the mustang with a cetain panache, a "Je ne sais quoi" that has my breath catching and my palms sweating. If you're not a car guy (car person, excuse me) this may sound imbalanced to you, but you will never understand. Those that do will hopefully excuse my zeal, unbridled enthusiasm, and unrepentant question asking all throughout this site. I love my new girl, and I want to make her as healthy and fast as I can, hence all of the inquiry. At the ripe old age of 31, I now know how important safety and so called "supporting" mods are. Good brakes come first, safe and predictable suspension comes first, grenadeproof trans and rear come first. If you do these things now, you wont be crying later. Fortunately, as this car has only 42K, the brakes and suspension are very healthy. I would be interested in the urethane bushing upgrade someone mentioned if I knew where to find them. As far as trans is concerned, I need ro find out about this trans cooler gizmo. That concept is foreign to a mustang guy. I will take care of these "supporting mods" first before I do any serious speed related upgrades. I installed a K&N panel and removed the silencer (which was a much bigger job than I expected!!!) yesterday. That is the extent of my performance mods to date. However, I was beat (though not by much) by a punk kid in an Acura RSX Type S with a 7" exaust tip today. That was embarrasing and it must stop! I would've smoked him starting in 2nd gear in the Mustang. This once again leads me back to the chip. I need to find a chip that is already preprogrammed with timing advance, shift firmness; a premium tune basically that removes the B.S. Lincoln tune. I wouldnt mind this X-Cal everyone is talking about, but the high price coupled with the fact that i have no ides how to formulate a tune is a turn off. I need something "plug and play" for now while I figure out this cobra intake etc. Where do you all shop for parts that they are Mark VIII knowledgeable? Got a "plug -n- play chip / tuner with preloadede tune recommendation?

Are the Intech heads different in the Mark8 then rest of the Ford an LINCOLN's ? The Gen 2 do get "C-port heads" , right ? The Mark8 I have does need the old Cobra Intake . But it uses the "B-port heads ". Granted , I havent tore down a Mark8 Gen2 engine , so is it that different ? And hitting search didn't help . Or maybe I"m talking about the wrong intake . Sorry if I'm wrong , but I am going by the shape of the Gen2 and it does looke like the Mach 1 "C-port" intake at a glance .

Ok, I know EXACTLY what you are feeling. Look at my sad Notch sitting in the back of the garage, dead battery, neglected, all because I was having fun mod'n my newly aquired M8.

You can still have the Mustang "feel/look" but have the comfort of the Mark. I did, hehe.

See i do drive my vette ;)

Dang...I forgot about those and YOU DIDN'T SEND THEM TO ME! Those are the only pictures I have of the car all done WITH the HID's. You have more that you can email me?

The two shops that I have found that seem the most dedicated to Mark VIII performance would be:

www.blueovalchips.com

and

www.supercoupeperformance.com

I know going from the 5.0 to this mod motor might seem like a handful. But once you really get into it, its not that much different, and is still really pretty easy to work with. There is definitely nowhere close to the same aftermarket for the Lincolns as there is for the pony cars, but for me that adds more appeal. Why build the same car your neighbor has?

I'm not sure if you're still a little confused about the trans cooler, but I'll attempt to explain. Feel free to ignore if I'm going to basic. Stock trans coolers for automatic transmission cars is usually just a single tube that has trans fluid running through it. This is ok for stock cars, but when you get a chip and harder shifts, it comes at the price of heat. Purchasing a blade-like trans cooler, (think mini radiator) it allows your trans fluid temps to stay much lower and keeps the transmission in better shape. Its the same idea as throwing on a larger oil pan, or a lower temp thermostat.

I can tell you from my own car, that getting a tune greatly helped. I haven't been able to get any better times at the track, because I haven't been able to get the same traction. My e.t.s are staying at the same points, while my mph has gone up 7-8 mph, with 60ft times that are 0.2-.03 seconds slower. The car just feels a lot stronger and once I get the traction issue resolved I should see a good drop in times.

Also I completely understand what you mean about the passion for the car. One last thing, I'm not sure if I've said it before, but welcome to the site. :)

I thought harder shifting actually created less heat...the clutches don't slip as much.

True. Heat will come with a high stall converter. Even stock though, the tranny will benefit greatly from a cooler.

But at the same time wouldnt the greater pressures by shifting harder (mostly in valve body) create more heat that stock?

Trans Cooler

Trans Cooler

Hey everybody,

I'm running a little late. I got caught up doing a clutch (with hand tools and jack stands on my back...) on my buddies 89' 5.0. I'm a little tired so I won't be typing any rambling opinions tonight. Thanks for the breakdown of the trans cooler J Bird. Although it was basic, I did not feel patronized in the least as I actually didn't know all of that. T-5's don't overheat, they just spit gears at the most inopportune moments! You never mentioned which chip it was that gave you those phenomenal (7 to 8 mph trap speed improvement!?!?!?!?) gains. Drum Roll............................
Also, I was surfing and came across Ford T.S.B. (Technical Service Bulletin) about trans coooler installation. Its T.S.B. 98-8-7. I wonder if this is specific to Marks? My family has a great relationship with our local Lincoln / Mercury Dealership (Over 60 cars bought / leased). If this trans cooler T.S.B. is even remotely applicable to my Mark, I may just have it dealer installed. We'll see.

But at the same time wouldnt the greater pressures by shifting harder (mostly in valve body) create more heat that stock?

The longer the clutch pack slips (read: softer shift), the more heat is generated.

And the valve body may activate a shift, but the clutch pack actually bears the brunt of it, which is what you actually feel.

Ok, I knew stock they clutch packs slipped for a long time but figured with a chip the loss of heat from shorters and possible heat gain from more line pressure might equal or somehting lol. Either way better to upgrade the cooler.

And solipcistic, I replied in your thread asking about chips saying what I have. Its an Xcal2.

Yes, it is.

The Xcal2 is indeed a great programmer.

Eh, I have a basic understanding of what goes into programming a car.. But I have an Xcal2 that had two programs written into it (one for the A/F and one for the transmission). If I ever wanted to change the shift points could I do so with the Xcal2

I basically use it to read trouble codes  heh
