Door Handle or not...

The drivers door handle broke on the CE, is there anything special I need to know about finding a new one?

Are they 97-98 specific? or 98 specific? or will 93-98 work just fine?

Also, do I need the whole surround, or just the handle?

Basically... tell me everything you know about fixing this please... :D

Thanks!

I am pretty sure you need a 97 or 98.

When I changed mine getting the old one out was very easy, getting the new one in was not. Never could get the key lock rod (?) hooked up.

Did you have to take the inside door panel off, or is it something you get to from outside?

:D Thanks!

Yes the inside has to come off, thats the easy part. Getting the handle reconnected was not easy, I asked here for help with no response. I guess I should have taken pictures.

just thought Wed. 11/3/2010 I'll be taking off the pass. side not sure how much you can see, but i'll try and get some picks if I think they might help.

Taking the panel off isn't a problem, I've done that a bunch of times, it's fishing around connecting things on the handle I've never done.

:D Thanks!

Yup! That's the hard part.
I don't miss the key/lock thing. Still have the remote and the keyless entry, But if I go back into that side again I will tape that rod down. It sometimes holds the switch (?) in the locked possition and I have to go in through the pass. side

Door handles don't break. People break the door handles ;)

Just buy a new one, I think it's like $30 bucks (list is $54.30) and comes in primer. But you need to verify it's the handle that broke, and not the housing standoffs that the handle pivots in.

I should have taken a picture of it... :(

I'll see if I can get one tomorrow...

"Just buy a new one". But then you have to get it painted which is more than the 30-50 for a used one. Of course that is if you can find one inyou color.

It is not too bad replacing it. Just take your time to alalyze what you are doing. There are a couple of plastic clips that break easily. You are skinny like me so it ieasy to just get your whole arm in there.

Joe, the repair is not too bad. I have done it a few times. The tricky part is understanding how to get the lock rod conencted and disconected. There is a little clip that opens and closes. The rod looks threaded, but it does not screw out of the clip. Every time I do it I spend an hour reducating myself on this. This job definetly is amultiple cuss word job. One of these days someone should remove the mechanisms from the door to take some pics.

Here is where the handle broke...

yep, typical break spot, especially for me when I replaced both. Door panel off, take handle off from inside out then replace same way. Find the right angles and its not that bad. If you want to come here to the shop and do it, we did two

Remember the opal car ? It was broken in exactly the same spot. I repaired it with some reinforcement on both sides of that weak spot, I doubt this thing will ever break ;)
