Sometimes you can't say it better than someone already has:
"Religion is the impotence of the human mind to deal with occurrences it cannot understand." -Karl Marx
"[Religion] is the opium of the people." -Karl Marx
If going to church/believing makes you feel better, and you need that to cope with whatever is happening or has happened to you, I can appreciate that. Many people go because tis the easiest place to find a social situation where they can be accepted. I appreciate that too. Thats what its supposed to do. Its a lot better for a society than you doing drugs or many other things that people use to cope that are worse or potentially unhealthy (not that its not, but its unlikely to be for most people). In my opinion its silly for you to carry it so far as to say it protects you from things you cannot control. (Although making that argument is silly of me and probably a waste of time because believing that believing will protect you from something is a huge part of the Christian faith.)
To each their own but unless you enjoy inviting discussions like this (like I do, by making this thread) you probably shouldn't convey a religious position on an actual possible event. Saying you believe, one thing, saying you believe it protects me/everyone else from something, inviting a debate. IMHO, YMMV.
For the record, I think everyone has their own opiate, and I would never look down on you because you believe differently. Mine right now is my own sense of arrogance, self importance, and reassuring myself of how extremely successful I am going to be. (Am I joking? Who knows.) A year ago it was my gorgeous now ex girlfriend. 5 years ago it was religion. All were/are productive and healthy and if one was to become unhealthy (such as my affinity for exgirlfriend did) I would change it.
