Then maybe all of those California trees would be under water.

Seriously though isn't it nice god is finally punishing Californians for being blasphemous communists?

Well I am taking your comments as some serious sarcasm. I am in Northern California but I feel bad for my fellow Californians down south... the sky is black and it is raining ash... nothing to make fun of really.

I still don't get it

I could be wrong, but he might be refering to divine wrath brought on by a sinful society. I for one would like to see the porn industry here go up in flames, but speculating as to the root cause of the fires is pointless to me.

I do have a feeling though that being a "Christian-based" country has saved us from disasters of THEE tsunami magnitude. Let's thank God that the fires aren't THAT bad.

Sometimes you can't say it better than someone already has:

"Religion is the impotence of the human mind to deal with occurrences it cannot understand." -Karl Marx

"[Religion] is the opium of the people." -Karl Marx

If going to church/believing makes you feel better, and you need that to cope with whatever is happening or has happened to you, I can appreciate that. Many people go because tis the easiest place to find a social situation where they can be accepted. I appreciate that too. Thats what its supposed to do. Its a lot better for a society than you doing drugs or many other things that people use to cope that are worse or potentially unhealthy (not that its not, but its unlikely to be for most people). In my opinion its silly for you to carry it so far as to say it protects you from things you cannot control. (Although making that argument is silly of me and probably a waste of time because believing that believing will protect you from something is a huge part of the Christian faith.)

To each their own but unless you enjoy inviting discussions like this (like I do, by making this thread) you probably shouldn't convey a religious position on an actual possible event. Saying you believe, one thing, saying you believe it protects me/everyone else from something, inviting a debate. IMHO, YMMV.

For the record, I think everyone has their own opiate, and I would never look down on you because you believe differently. Mine right now is my own sense of arrogance, self importance, and reassuring myself of how extremely successful I am going to be. (Am I joking? Who knows.) A year ago it was my gorgeous now ex girlfriend. 5 years ago it was religion. All were/are productive and healthy and if one was to become unhealthy (such as my affinity for exgirlfriend did) I would change it.

Think tower of babel.

Yes for those less humor inclined, I am joking. I have lived in FL through the fires and hurricanes, and I made god hates Hispanics jokes then.

Sarcasm or what ever it was not humorous.

You're telling me you didn't start laughing when the Mayor of New Orleans said that about Katrina? The sarcasm is funny not in and of itself, whats happening there is sad, people are losing their homes. Its funny because so many people actually believe it.

Ok, that is funny that people actually believe it.

Kyle, say someone close to you got hit by a car and died instantly right in front of you.

Immediately, I walked right up to you and said "god punishes kyle" and laughed in your face about it.

How would that make you feel?

I hope you didnt think i was trying to be mean or anything because i'm definitely the new guy and some of you dont know me yet. :imnew: <-- see :)

Personally - i dont live there and it doesnt effect me, i'm not religous, and i dont like democratic places or leaders...even then and alot more which i wont get into now, after putting all that asside, it doesnt make it right to joke at someone elses misfortune and tragedys proclaiming "god is punishing california" so i was putting it into retrospect for kyle, to see how what he said, could have been interpretted by others. ;)

I thought I was backing you up there, but now, to quote Leo, "...I don't get it..."

I'll give you what you said about "religion", but I don't think any sane person could say that following Jesus' example is not a good thing to do...

Btw, Karl Marx was one of the biggest fools in history. He says 'religion' is my opiate, I say his lack of it is his self-justification to do whatever he feels like doing...damn the next guy. His communist mother-country's collapse pretty much speaks for itself. He's probably having a grand conversation with Fredrich Neitche as we speak...

It was directed at everyone posting on this thread as a friendly reminder. There are rules of conduct that apply to everyone posting on this board, and I would suggest that everyone review them. :)

To folks who don't believe in God, it would be like telling him "Mickey Mouse punishes Kyle".

He would just think that you, I, and all the other people of faith out there are idiots.
