Project newskin is underway.

I just ordered a Mustang Cobra FR500 wheel...Looking for the airbag section or black cover. The FR 500 wheel M-3601-B only comes in black. (Which is still cool cause thats the color i wanted anyways instead of my current dirty ivory one) My interior was all Ivory.

Also what is needed is entire set of 4 black seatbelts from a parts car. Must have no scratches or mars in plastic and not be cracked anywhere. I see everyother part up on ebay, but not a complete set of four in nice condition.
I am revamping entire interior to a two tone Black and original Ivory color. All four seats will be reskinned with new ivory material and have black perforated centersections with lincoln logo in same position as factory location. A new black carpet will be ordered and all trim pieces will be repainted factory Ivory. New black recovered headliner will be installed as well as sunroof door.
I haven't checked the manuals yet or CD, but does our steering wheel come off with a standard puller or a special one is needed?

I will post pics as soon as i start removal of everything this weekend. While im in there, weight reduction things will be accomplished at same time.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Just pics of new mustang steering wheel for now. Car is getting hurricane damage to exterior fixed and repainted finally. My 3" gash in the driver's door and stone chips all over the place will be no more! :)

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Give me year and model of preferred seatbelts and the cobra bag.

I'm a broker and pull from thousands of non-internet yards - I just bought a Mark VIII because I found 4100 potential parts car listings on my subscription service from these smaller yards....

I'll do my best to help. Email me at imautoparts@yahoo.com

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Thank you. Just got your email in my box the other day. My car is a 1995 so i guess up to 1996 would be safe picks for not modding factory hardware. i need the complete set of 4 black seatbelts and plastic covers. Also black window switch panels and door handle bezels for both doors. And the two black ashtrays and little cover doors for the rear.
I am looking for an Ivory drivers airbag as mine is pretty faded and has a fingernail size gouge in it from previous owner. Cobra or Mark 8 bag. Doesnt matter. Although i don't think the cobra had ivory as an option for interior. The new carpet and headliner material arrived and is black. Seats will be redone in Ivory with black perforated going down the middle of buckets with stiched lincoln logo on all 4 seats.
I'll be picking up car from the paint shop on monday i think, then its time to gut the interior and see what i can leave out for weight savings.
I think one time that Ponyfreak posted the weight of all the sound insulating junk removed and "excess baggage" as i call it that isn't used anymore like the phone box and the factory amp that won't be going back in. I just can't find it anywhere doing the search.

When i get the car back i will take pics of nasty ivory carpet and steering wheel and headliner that got water damage from the hurricane, for before and after shots.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Here are some before i started taking everything out. The following post will have the almost naked interior. I got extremely upset after finding the cob job stereo install Circut City did on my rear speakers install. No wonder why it was vibrating. They put the damn thing together with cardboard and silicone instead of using the proper plastic Crutchfield type mounting kits for oversize speakers. All my mounting tabs were broken and both tweeters were just hanging there with capacitor dangling in breeze, not mounted secure. These are the same monkeys that ran a sheet metal screw through my air ride wire harness installing my amp. Lesson learned once again...Don't trust anyone to do it right unless you do it yourself. (well obviously i havent learned it yet) ;-).
Alot of time i just don't have time to do it all and pay people to do it while im working and drop the car off. Luckily no little kids were walking by driveway when i pulled that cover off and saw that. I was making up new swear words. haha
Ok heres the before dissassembly pics.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Here are some more after the rear seat was tanken out and jute mat. Headliner is also removed in these pics.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Front pass seat removed. Dear Jesus these are heavy! I put it on digital bathroom scale cause i was curious. With all harware still bolted to chair with just the harness clips unhooked, pass side weighed in at 56.5 LBS! Thats 10 HP rolling, if we loose both seats at dragstrip and sit on a 5 gallon bucket. lol
As long as im on a roll, BRB.....the upper and lower rear seat combined on same scale is 31.7 lbs.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

You can see here where all the standing water was in puddle in carpet which stained it pretty bad. Hurricane had somehow sucked up the sunroof a little and water got all onto headliner and leaked all over the place and onto seats and wrecked them too. This carpet isn't good enough for my dog's house now.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Here the center console is removed.

Haha STILL looking for a low priced EATC unit on the auction site. Three of my lights dont light up in mine, hard to see it at night what you want. Seems every nice looking one with no scratches goes though the roof when i start to bid on it. lol Maybee i'll make another screename. lol

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Heres pics of headliner removed for those that have never seen whats underneath. You can see the motor that opens our sunroofs and front controll unit. My slideroof is all stained and dirty from standing water damage as you can see.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Heres few more shots and it got too dark to work outside anymore.

Can't wait till my new place is built and i finally have a two car garage with flourescent lights. I wil finally have victory against the dive bomber birds that like to poop on my vehicles and the evil cat i can never catch in the act, that climbs on my hood at night and leaves sand prints and gray hair in the morning. Sunvisor damage is shown before removal with headliner.
I'll take more on Sunday when its sunny outside and i yank the carpet and remove the sunroof assembly for refurbishing, painting, and cleaning out the drain lines when i drop it off to the upolstery shop.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Not really, had the entire interior gutted in about 3-4 hours of going slow so i wouldnt break anything shooting the breeze with neighbor who probably wondered why i was making all the trips carrying all these parts inside for. lol
Only thing left inside car now is drivers seat, and carpet. I'll hit those tommorow and take more pics of gutted interior when its sunny and good lighting. Also will be removing steering wheel and airbag for the cobra one.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Looks great, Jeff. That car is going to turn alot of heads when it is done. Did you try to call or e-mail Jamie for the gen 1 parts you need? His shop is in Crystal Beach - (727) 789-6474 cchevrolow95@aol.com, and he will sell parts directly to you. On ebay, he sells under the handle mopar68gtx.

Hope your schedule will allow you to go to SSHS6 this fall. We had a great time last year, and you can get alot more runs in now that the gremlins are taken care of. Keep the pictures coming! :)

Yeah. I look for him and another guy i keep buying from on auction site. i have yet to call him but will be gathering some more parts in the future when i get parts stripped down and start to repaint them in Ivory interior paint. Thats what is going to take the longest hours i believe is the prepping panels and trim to accept the coat of Ivory paint.
And then like the infamous Chiltons says "Installation is reverse of removal" haha What happens if you forget the removal? haha Just kidding. i was actually surprised at how easy and fast it all came apart. Like it knew it was getting a beauty facelift and cooperated. I used to fight tooth and nail with broken bolts and stripped out things with the 79 Trans Am every time. :D

RE: Project newskin is underway.

I found my original Reinhart chip! The very first one i bought for the stock car with 4:10's and exhaust. I tore house apart looking for that to sell on auction site, and it had fallen behind front kick panel and has been riding there ever since. I mus of left it there during the juggling of three chips i had at one time or another. Also $4.57 in change and a 20.00 bill that was in rear ashtray? haha tip from an ex rider? Who knows. Also i found alot of stubs to resorts here in FL, and a womans buisness card that works as a realestate resort seller?
What i was actually hoping and hunting for was a build sheet to frame for the car shows, but I did not find any. There was a wierd saran wrapped fiberglass type material inside it in a bag under the carpet. Anyone know what it is used for? You can see it in the pics following.
