Project newskin is underway.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Yeah, lol the assembly line guy probably was supposed to be spreading it out on the drivers side, and was having a bad day, and just threw it under the carpet. It was right where the cat convertor would be under the floor. Makes sense. Ill spread it out under the carpet before i bolt down the seat.

It's supposed to be in the plastic bag, that holds it together better.

When I used to work at Masland (they made the carpets for our cars) we used to call them "diapers" for fun..:)

RE: Project newskin is underway.

haha yeah it does look like a diaper. I'll probably put it right back at same position they had it above the cat on that side. Good news i scored a black mustang steering wheel assembly out of a black GT from the auction site. I'll use the back shroud and the cruise buttons and my air bag, it should work. Talked with the ulphosterer today and seats are almost all done. Should be just in time when i get the car buttoned back up to drive over there to remove the moonroof and recondition the rails and blow out the drain tubes. Headliner is all done also.

Some more with the drivers seat bolted in to drive car back to the interior shop with. I finally got the steering wheel situation sorted out.
Bought a new Mustang GT wheel and stole the back cover off of it and the spring loaded horn rails (Lincoln horn rails dont fit without modding and cutting the aluminum, but it could be done). It lines up perfect at top and bolts using the mustang mounting tabs nice. You just have to cut and crimp in 4 new tabs for the horn to work. Lincoln uses one wire run in series, and mustangs use two different hookups it looks like from their wiring harness.

Heres some more of the rear panels in newspaper trim and two of the steering wheel installed. i decided im going to paint the upper rail flat satin black that goes all around the upper part of door and sail panels. Then ill put one of those burlwood stick on kits on all panels. over the black. The original ivory will stay the same color, just a new coat of paint. I cant believe how flimsy these panels are. They are nothing more than laminate cardboard and injection moulded foam like that "great stuff" in a can dries up like. Very cheaply made, makes you not want to put your arm on rest in the back seat seeing how flimsy they are. Haha thats it.....no one rides in back seat anymore. lol

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Heres some more of the steering wheel on, and different message center. Painting the doorhandle cups satin black and and buttons too.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Some shots of car at ulpholstery shop and freshly painted trim parts. I am simply amazed at their level of craftmanship and attention to detail.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Whoever came up with the idea first about using the oven cleaner on the panels to remove the ruberized sludge. A big thank you goes out for posting it. lol I did a couple of panels by fingernail method while at work, and quickly found out that fingernails dont last long, and it takes forever.
Just spray the cleaner on the rubber panels and let sit for about 15 or 20 minutes. Then get a plastic bristle wheel scrubber and go to town under running water. Takes it off instantly with no smearing. It works flawless. Then just sand and paint to your fav color.
I'm using satin black on mine. I didnt want a high gloss black because im going to be putting a dark burlwood stick on kit over top of it down the road, and i wanted it to be "set back" and the wood to pop out.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Thanks, those are my old ivory ones after the oven cleaner trick, sanding, and painting.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Drivers door installed. Had to modify the tweeter location and make ABS panels to mount and hold the Infinity tweeters in because i didnt want to put back in the cardboard and have it rattle.
I checked Crutchfield and they of course don't make a nice flat tweeter mounting plate for our cars, so like everything else, if you want it...you have to make it.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Some pics from the passenger side to the left with door closed. I still have to pull the dash front plate and stip it down and make it black, but its slowly becoming an interior again. Even though i did enjoy driving it around like an empty stock car for a while. You can hear everything...including the fuel pump buzzing behind you.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

It is really looking very, very sharp. I like the choices you've made. :)

I hope one day to pimp my ride by having blue carbon fiber wrapped on the trim pieces. One question(click the link)...

Is the piece directly behind the door pull removable/replaceable?

BTW, on your attachments, in the window for selecting pics to attach, for Step 2. Define your attachment type:, select the "JPEG image file" option and click the selection Check this box if you wish to embed attachment URL in the message text box prior to Step 3. Click on 'Upload File!' button to finish. ;)

The door handle cups? Yes they are replaceable, they pop out with snap clips. You can pop yours out without removing the door panel. 3 snap tabs hold it in.
If youre talking about the actual door handle you pull on to close the door, then yes its replaceable, but it is cemented in with two tabs. I broke mine on accident cleaning it and scrubbing on it too hard with a brush. I actually superglued mine back to the still mounted tabs on backside of door after it got painted ivory. You have to remove the styrofoam shape liner in the inside of the door to get to the aluminum fake spin nuts, that hold it in. Really cheaply made stuff, like that spray foam inside a remote controll boat to keep it from sinking. I broke my styrofoam on both doors being super carefull and going slow. its really brittle stuff. I just glued it back together with stay soft adhesive.

RE: Project newskin is underway.

Yeah, not the cup behing the handle, but the piece behind the door pull you use to close the door. I think in your case it would look nice in contrast as well.

But maybe not, sometimes a bit too much is bad as it starts to look 'busy' and more like a Gateway bovine? :7 I was just scheming I may want to have that particular piece wrapped in carbon fiber as well when I get around to doing the interior.
