Vortech install started.

Finally had some time today to work a bit on fitting the damn thing in there. I've got two problems so far, or rather concerns. I lowered the radiator before, and I thought it'd be enough, but apparently it still needs to be moved. It is very low already, clears that notch in the core support next to the ac condenser. But there is no way in hell it's gonna clear the air intake tube to the sc. I am really hesitant to cut the fan shroud, but that's seems like the only solution at this point. Any tips ?

Second thing, I'm not sure if that's the right angle for the outlet to be at. Did you guys have it the same way ?

any comments appreciated.

RE: Vortech install started.

I wish I could help. :D

But for now I'll just watch. ;) Post lots of pics please.

RE: Vortech install started.

This is the good part. MAKE sure you have the top of the radiator tilted as close to the condensor as possible.

If you do these are your next choices.

Choice #1 My preferred choice.
You need to take the radiator and shroud out of the car. Cut the shroud and get the blade closer to the radiator. YOu will have to modify the mounts to get the fan to bolt up.

Choice #2
You can lower the radiator even further. To do that you will need to remove that metal below the radiator. Once you get it lowered more, stil lkeep the radiator tilted forward towards the condensor. Now you have to modify you brackets again, and you need to get another lower radiator hose.

Or you can get a lot of room and do both.

YOur inlet looks a little low. I would move it up some. How much you ask. Get your piping togeather and see what is easiest to get in there.

RE: Vortech install started.

If I cut the shroud around the edge, I can prolly gain a 1/2" or so. That won't be enough. What if I move the AC cond. further too ?
I am not sure about moving the rad even lower. It seems too exposed already as it is. If someone only made a radiator 2" shorter than the stock one. ;( ;(

The inlet should almost line up fine. Keep in mind I lost about 1/2" when the K-member was shimmed.

RE: Vortech install started.

Well, I can't really help you because I've never done it, but I agree with Driller. KEEP POSTING PICS! Thanks!

RE: Vortech install started.

I cut 3/4" off of my shroud all the way around. That leaves 1/4" clearance between the fan and the radiator. I will also be cutting out ther metal below the radiator to mount it right up against the condenser. It should net me about 1 3/4". Hopefully it will be enough. You could also get a Grifin radiator, since they are smaller and would sit further down.

RE: Vortech install started.

Well, I moved the AC condenser forward about 1/2" or so. Just straighten the brackets and drill new holes from the bottom. I didn't know there was that much room left. I also cut the bottom support and bent it into an L shape = 2" lower and secure. It isn't the prettiest, but hey it's all covered by the bumper anyways. I already have about 1/4 of space around the inlet tube, I might cut the shroud a bit to give it even more extra play, since the engine does move quite a bit.
Aren't Griffins smaller only by a bit, but also a lot thicker at the same time ?

Yes. But they also allow for quite a bit of room at the top, where you need it. I saw the one in Pony's pearl car and he has tons of room.

RE: Vortech install started.

the engine will not move forward any if all, jsut side to side. There is room in there to get the vortech on w/o cutting the fan shroud. It has been done.

RE: Vortech install started.

Made some progress today. I would get it running, but my gf is already pissed I spent the weekend on it ... ;) ;) ;)

Here are some pics.

I swear everything on this car has to be custom made. the vortech kit if faaaar from a bolt-on. I ended up cutting the shroud 1/2" around the edge, moving the condenser forward and modifying the bottom support to clear the inlet tube. It fits fine now. If the k-member wasn't lowered the 1/2", it would be prolly easier. The return line is done, all the piping looks like it will fit, however the shock tower is in the way to make it a pefect fit for the TB to vortech tube. I still have to do the oil supply line, IAC hose, and the mighty bypass valve. Everything is a very tight fit, but I've already learned installing the cobra intake that this car is a challenge. I will need to lower the compressor a bit to allow the pro-m filter to fit in there. Look at the AC lines - talk about a tight fit.

RE: Vortech install started.

and i thought this was a bolt on operation. Damn Now i gotta rethink bringing my lincoln into the Horsepower ages like my vette n truck

RE: Vortech install started.

Keep up the good work and thanks for the pics. :)

Is there a way to do do the Vortech install with a Gen1 intake? Every one I've seen has the Cobra intake.

RE: Vortech install started.

Nice job, Jeremi.
I can't wait to take a ride in it with you. By any chance are you hitting up the Elmhurst meet on June 2nd ?.
I'll give you a call soon and see what's up.

Awesome job so far!

Awesome! So when are you going to be ready to head to the dragstrip?

Yes. Pics soon.

RE: Vortech install started.

There has been 3 people already that have put a vortech on witha gen 1 intake. Keith, Myself, the guy that did Big Bills black car and now eli will be the fourth that i know of.

Jeremi you are doing good work. There is nothing easy and bolt on with this car. Just try not to get discouraged. Keep giving it hell.

When do you think you will make it to the tuners?

RE: Vortech install started.

If I manage to work on it during the week, then hopefully Friday, or next week Monday the latest. Then I'm off to pick up some DRs.
Dave, what's Lidio's wbesite and ph# again ? Jerry is as usual nowhere to be found.

The only thing that discourages me are these old rusted bolts get broken so easy LOL. Beacuse of that I need one intake bolt (the pin that holds the alternator and crossover tube) - all the ones I've got are too short.

RE: Vortech install started.

Sorry this post so late to help a lot but here goes. I cut the core support at the bottom and added two inches this dropped the radiator and fan shroud. Then I cut the upper mounting tabs off the radiator where they hit any thing as it moves forward. I welded a Z bracket to fill in the space in font of the radiator at the bottom. Every thing else should fit. I do not have any mounts at the top of the radiator every thing including upper radiator holds it in place. I even have enough room for a four-inch air inlet tube.

RE: Vortech install started.

Hey man >>> better late than never !!! I did the same thing, plus some extra brackets up top.

I finally got the car running today with the stock belt for now.

What size belt should I be looking for with the stock 3.48 pulley ???
I understand there might be a few sizes worth trying to get the best
fit, but approx. size would make the search for one a lot easier.
