Vortech install started.

Nice going on your project. Keep up the good work we are all anxious for your results. With all that you are doing don't forget to tie your sub-frames. It would be a bear not to be able to open the car doors after a couple of passes. :p

RE: Vortech install started.

Belt size is 6 rib 113 inches Gates Number K061130.
FYI every year I buy new bearings for the small idler supplies by Vortech. It seems that if I park the car for the winter the bearings fail. So now I just buy new every spring.
The only thing else in the Votech kit that needed attention was the fuel pump to tank fittings were a different size.
I mounted my MAF down under in the fender well above the air ride compressor. I extended the brackets that mount the compressor 2 inches. This puts the MAF and filter front of the core support and in cold air.

RE: Vortech install started.

Got the belt today. $35 from Rockauto.

It was really difficult to get it on there. But I guess tight is good when is comes to supercharger belts.

Keith, did you have a different crank pulley (smaller) or is everything stock ? I would not want to have to swap a new belt on the road somewhere.

I'm leaving the car at Lidio's on Tuesday. I should have the results on Wednesday.

RE: Vortech install started.

I have all stock Pulleys in the car right now. I did buy a UPR idler pulley that is larger in dia. but I am going to a smaller pulley on the supercharger when my new short block gets here.
I made a special tool for installing the belt on the road. It is a long screw driver with the end bent like a (L) or a (7). I use it to push the belt between the idlers and then to fish it around the supercharger pulley. I have other tricks I use when changing belts on the fly. I ground down the side of the alternator so the belt will slide between the supercharger and the alternator.
The other trick is to keep a rubber expandable frost plug on the trunk the same size as the upper radiator hose. It is a bear to reach past the upper hose when it is hot and it is in the way. If you slowly open the radiator. Cap and relieve the pressure then remove the venting plug on the upper cross over tube. Now you can disconnect the upper radiator at the crossover and stick the frost plug into the end of the radiator hose and clamp it in place with the hose clamp. now you can move the hose down and out of the way so you can get both hands in there and work and not spill a drop of coolant. When the belt is on put things back together the last thing to do is purge the air out of the crossover tube with the crossover vent loose
I have an old radiator with a hole drilled and tapped in it with a 3/8" hose barb screwed into it and a short piece of hose. Put the cap on and blow into the hose until the air is purged out of the crossover then tighten the vent plug and put on your radiator cap.
Never travel without an extra belt they are not a common size.
It takes about 15 Min to change the belt on the fly with all the right tools.

RE: Vortech install started.

I put the belt on all of the accessories except the water pump, which is the easiest to slide the belt onto. They also make a 114 in. belt ... would that be too loose ? I think I might order a 114 as a spare to make it easier ...

RE: Vortech install started.

114 is too long. The water pump is the last pulley to go around.

RE: Vortech install started.

You may also want to look into upgrading the belt idler arm (tensioner?). one of the local guy's with a vorctec powered 2v Tbird had problems with his jumping, and he went through i think 5 belts last year.

RE: Vortech install started.

Do yourself a favor and buy the improved steel tensioner for a cobra. It comes as a kit with a new belt and all.
I welded a nut on it to turn it with cause the piece that comes on it to turn it is pretty pathetic and breaks.
It provides a little more tension and its steel instead of alluminum and it helps with the belt problems associated with vortechs.
The main problem with them is I feel the bracket flexes under boost and eventually wears out the belt from misalignment. While idleing it looks properly aligned, but under boost it isnt.
You might want to try and fab up an extra brace of some kind.
I had a customer that every 500 miles it eats a belt.Hes put over 3000 miles on it and 6 belts so far.

RE: Vortech install started.

The factory tensioner seems to hold up fairley well I had more problems with the vortech idlers and alternators locking up. I did have a lot of miles on mine. I put the supercharger on at 80,000 miles and it now has 160,000 all with 4.10s in the rear.

RE: Vortech install started.

Thanx for the warning. I've heard of people having some problems. I'll order a new tensioner anyways. I am getting new idler bearings tomorrow as well. Doesn't the new tensioner have that 1/2" breaker bar hole in a different, more accessible spot ? Right now the vortech bracket is in the way.

RE: Vortech install started.

There is a new alluminum bracket that has the hole moved out towards the end.Its better then the stock one.THEN there is an even better one made of steel. Its designed for the cobra.Make sure you get the right one.I just gave mine to Joe cause I will never put another Vortech on a 4.6 ford.I hate their bearring package and I'm not too found of the bracket either.
Dan, if you read this what do you think of the Paxton bracket?

RE: Vortech install started.

After my first bearing went vortech sent me a new redesigned bracket. N/C under warranty. I am not fond of Fords tensioner hole location on my new tensioner it is half behind the mounting bracket. let me know if you find the part number for the steel tensioner and I will order one for mine. I do feel fortunate as only having minor problems on a new kit design. I dont believe the kit was out very long when I ordered mine in May of 98.

RE: Vortech install started.

I have no idea about the part number.Jeremy can get it from Lidio though.Hes the one that told me aout it.He called and ordered it and it was at his shop in half an hour.

RE: Vortech install started.

i really like the paxton bracket i think it is really nice. i never had a problem with my gator back belt when switch belts i had problems though. the pro-chargers break there idlers all the time as well. the paxton is the only one i have seen with the least problems. i like nitrous of cours as the idlers dont blow up if you know what i mean. LOL

RE: Vortech install started.

For the future reference - [strong] 96-98 4.6 DOHC Cobra Steel Tensioner part no. XR3Z-6B209-DB [/strong]

It's a kit that comes with the stock length belt. I am told it's not available separately. Should run around $100.

RE: Vortech install started.

I finished up everything today, off to Lidio's tomorrow. The car runs fine, drives normal. Lidio was surprised when I told him that.
I am gonna put new plugs in before he starts tuning. Anything else I should ask him or be concerned about ?
