18 year catch up starts

I just love this car, so far. Once again it let me know it wanted attention before something went wrong. Had a small water leak on right side front floorboard (it's been raining rivers here for a week and a half). After trying to diagnose it myself in between showers, I noticed 2 of the plastic (screws) push pins were missing on the right side of the cowl. Had them 'replaced' and a little silicone on the cowl and no more leak. But before getting it fixed, developed a little squeal on start up. Seems the belt tensioner needed to be replaced as the belt was starting to track inward. Had the belt replaced at the same time as it was the original. It didn't look all that bad but I figured that 18 years was long enough for anything that crucial. I also had the transmission fluid drained/refilled. It only has 71k on it but I want it to last a long time and be able to do a 'Lincoln Highway' tour sometime with no problems. Have plans to have brake and ps fluids done before too long. At this rate, someone's going to have a 'new' car when I don't drive anymore (ie, dead).

I've done a couple little parts of the Lincoln Highway in the past. It goes through some beautiful areas. Get it fixed, and take that drive. It should be a great experience!

18 years on the belt, WOW. Next time it's up in the air, check out the front end parts. It seems common around 100K they need some front end parts, ball joints, bushings, etc. Car sounds like it was well cared for.

Yeah, everytime it goes in the air, I check it out. Steering/driving is tight. Dealer replaced right ball joint before I bought it. Couldn't figure out why both sides didn't fail about same time. It's a one (now two) local car and everytime a mechanic does anything to it, they remark on how well it's been cared for. Just got a call from my brother in McHenry and will be bringing him up some fireworks. Am pretty sure the car will make it without problems. Will have hoses checked before leaving but have newer tires and battery. It's time for a road trip as I've only put 1k miles on in the almost year I've had it. So far the only major work done to the car was that (can't swear enough) blend door that actually turned out to be the whole heater box, etc. being replaced/built. And, of course, the air compressor! But now I believe it's good to go (knock on wood trim). Every time I spend $ on this car I have to laugh at myself because I know I'll never get it back if I ever decide to sell it. So I have decided it might as well stay in the family. I'll probably pass it down to my brother-in-law when he retires (if ever) and it should keep him busy. Plus he doesn't have much hair left to pull out over it.

Eh. These are old cars. I don't worry so much about residual value. My car "gives it back" every time I drive it. It was in Pennsylvania last weekend, and I'll be heading to the great state of Colorado this next weekend. The 'ol girl loves to cruise..
