98 Mark SC Build

Thanks Serge, I would think it will be 9:1, since I am having the bottom end built to handle 600 + rwhp maybe some day, way, way... down the road. :)

Not yet Max. I could write a novel about them though... I am totally disappointed with how Boze has chosen to handle this situation.

I really hope they will get it right some time soon. So that you can get your money's worth and show it off to us :D

I am very pleased with the results of the hub conversion, brakes, wheels, and tires.

Now it is time to build the motor! :) Ryan and Aric are ordering all of the parts now to build the bottom end from the parts list posted earlier.

This final part of the build is going to have a cool little twist to it. I do not want to say too much about it just yet, but if it all works out, you just might read about this build at your local news stand. :) stay tuned...

I have been going back and forth with cams and heads - and frankly driving Aric, Ryan, and even myself nuts about this. So, Aric is going to hold off as long as he can addressing the heads and cams, and build the short block while I make up my mind.

Aric would like to see the Mark with 500rwhp. With custom heads, cams, and a GT fuel pump, it will be easy breathing cake for the motor to get there.

I am leaning to see the Mark with around 450rwhp - enough to dip into the 11's with 1.7 60's using some nice sticky slicks, but not too quick to be sent home for no roll bar.

Should be able to get there using stock cams and heads with another pulley change, Accufab TB, Cobra intake, electric water pump, and tuning. The motor will need to work a little harder for that kind of power obviously, but is way safe still.

My thought is to use the head and cam money to replace some 100k mile engine accessories - alternator, power steering pump, water pump, etc. And also powder coat the timing cover, cam covers, etc. to clean up the engine bay. :)

Build it for 500 and tune it for 450. ;)

lol I hear you JP :) Problem is justifying the cost of something that I am not going to use. I could go and buy a nice average mileage good condition 98 Mark VIII LSC - the entire car - for the cost of these heads and cams alone.

Or, like I said, start replacing some original stuff under the hood. I just think it is a very expensive 50rwhp that I will not use :)

I know, I will probably regret it. lol There I go again...

Stopped by Aric's shop, and Ryan said the engine block was sent to the machine shop today. I think he said that they are going to over bore .030, and stroke it to 302 CI. I am leaning even more to going with stock heads and maybe different cams if it is worth it, but I think am going to replace all the chains and guides with new, and replace all the coils, boots, powder coat stuff, etc., with the money saved. :)

Come on Mike, you're gonna regret it and you know it. It will cost twice as much to change the heads and cams in the next go-around. In effect you are backing into a corner, leaving stones unturned. I vote for the heads and cams over the fluff and stuff. lol :D

You may be able to buy a fleet of used Mark VIIIs for the cost - but remember, you can only drive one at a time! ;)

lol JP, Why you doing this to me :) I am trying to make the Mark - something that is now entirely impractical - and make it practical by using the stock heads and cams. :)

lol, Aric and Ryan got a good laugh when I told them that the other day. I think they are going to make it their mission statement only in reverse. :p

I dunno, I really do not want to start chasing big numbers like some of the Mustang and Marauder guys. If I go with the heads and cams, the temptation might be too great for me to resist. Next thing you know, I am ordering a T-Trim and going for 700rwhp.

Hey, don't blame me for your demise! :p

You're the one who got 'froggy' and decided to jump to the front of the line! LOL :D

Pssst... your Mark would look good with a cage.

Hee, hee, hee...

Mike you have officially lost it!! :p You've had the car back for barely 1 month and you're tearing the engine apart??!!!

You must really like driving that SL ;).

Why didn't you guys just use a Cobra V8 and make it into a 6 speed? You can put down 450 easy with one of those... instead of using a pretty old mark viii block with tons of miles.

lol JP, But you started it... and ...still your fault :p Aric said the same thing about the cage. He said Joey Bell would do it justice, and make it discreet - like it belongs there. OK, now I need to wake up and quit dreaming, because no cage is going in the Mark. :)

Max, That SL is a dream to drive. Best beater I have ever owned :) I am trading Aric my Teksid block and heads for one of his Teksid block and heads. So, the Mark is on the road still.

The Mark VIII Teksid block is the best modular block you can get - new or used. We talked about using other motors, but the net of it is, when it is all said and done, building our own engine ended up being the best choice. This engine will be as new when it is done. :)

12.162 now and your just trying to get in the 11's ? A 50 shot of nitrous would get you there easily. Not even, just by taking the passenger seat out would get you a 12.0! lol ! Im wanting a chip to get me in the 14's. If im running 15.3 now - a chip should bring me down to a 14.3 atleast - right?

No.

lol I am a pulley change away from 11's, so that is not a big worry on my list for the Mark. :)

A typical chip/dyno tune on a stock car is not going to trim a second off your et, like Serge said.

As a example, a recent dyno tune on a hemi Charger net 25rw/20tq with 93 on a stock 6.1 by Aric. That was a first pass with new tuning software, but you get the idea we are not talking big numbers here.

IMHO, Maybe a tenth or three on the et for a tune with shift points and lock-up done properly.

Ain't gonna happen.

I have a switch chip in my '93. I usually run the highway to the track in the 'stock tune' position. Once I forgot to switch the chip after arriving at the track. The car ran a 14.2 something. After I realized the mistake, I switched the chip to the race tune. All the remainder of the day, the car ran 13.7-13.8 consistently.

I have also mistakenly launched the car in 2nd gear and ran a 14.259 with a 2.2 sixty foot time. The same day at the track launching correctly in 1st gave me 13.9 ETs.

Given my own experiences, I'd say the absolute most any chip would give you is 5 tenths.

Hey guys I have a question. When I had my 89 Mustang GT I did 7.1 rocker arms, air filter, bumped up the fuel pressure, exhaust and some other Mods before the 190 shot of NOS. I got BETTER gas mileage day to day driving. What has your mods done to your gas mileage.

Last time I checked, I went backwards to 19 mpg interstate driving. I have closed my eyes to city mpg, and will not even check to see what it is.
