I discussed this with a Ford engineer many years ago and believe there is a different "reason for the coating" than discussed in this thread. He explained that the coating was applied to simulate "dimensionally" the carbon looking build up that occurs after several thousand miles. The coating has been applied for many years because they learned that when the fuel system was factory tuned without a coating, driveability and customer complaints followed after the fouling layer formed and almost always while still under warranty. The applied coating eliminated the driveability issues when tuned to it. To validate this explanation, I removed and polished the factory TB (1998 LSC), adjusted the blades to seat properly and reset the throttle position sensor to the proper voltage. Driveability with this change was excellent with a slight improvement in performance. I recommend ocassioinally cleaning the TB if this is done since it is tuned without coating, but I have not noticed a drop in driveability or performance for more than 30K miles. Conceptually, it is really not much different than setting up an aftermarket TB. Also, many if not all aftermarket TB's don't have coatings.
