Mike, the Sonex open cell foam panels do help a lot in the train room.
They absorb noise, and cut down the reflections from the walls. When you put your head in the room, you can actually sense the difference, a little like walking into an anechoic chamber.
I used to have a big wall hanging carpet train thing on the left wall that helped too, but the cat doesn't like things on the walls and pulled it down.
