No, just connecting to the grid. I figure the AC battery is a combo battery charger/inverter. But I don't really know as I have not looked up any specs on it.

Reading an schematic of an out of date grid and battery system, both are not connected at same time. In battery mode, the grid is locked out and the batteries are charged or supply power for the house. But there is no mention of an AC battery in the old drawings.

In my "combiner" box, there is provisions for two inverter strings and one "AC Battery" input. All are on the 220VAC side. Since I have three strings, I'm using the "AC Battery" input as my third string input.

The Tessla powerwalll was going to be a big ass UPS for solar people to use in black outs and at night. But Elon failed to deliver on them.

Ok, we went live Thursday, the 21th of December at 12:15. The shortest day of the year. Just in time for clouds to start rolling in. But we still generated 4KW. Yesterday, on the 22, we had heavy clouds and rain all day. We generated a whopping 3KW. Today, It is clear and the panels are working good. This link should allow you to see how the system is doing on a graphical basis..

Sounds like they're working great! I love the link to the GUI. I'll be watching that.

We installed a very small array at the school building I work in for "educational purposes" via some kind of a grant recently. I've been trying to track down the monitoring interface for that system. I'm sure it exists, but I wasn't involved in the project.

At a glance, I'd say it's maybe 8-10 of the panels like you have. It's -10f out there right now, so whatever research I'm doing, will be done from the comfort of my desk.. :)

Even though 1/2 the size and up in frozen north, that array outputs impressive power. Thanks for the link.

So... how much of this capital investment in solar power is subsidized? What is the payback period?

I only ask because by my best calculations it would take me 54.35 years to recoup my investment.

Other than the 30% tax subtraction, we didn't get any incentives. Based on our average electricity consumption, our ROI is about 20 years! Return on investment wasn't our goal. Our dream was to go green with an earth sheltered house and a wind turbine or a solar system. I guess our daughters will see the majority of the beneficents.

Pardon me while I go outside and hug my tree....
