Anyone else seen the commercial about it? So basically, you plug this thing into your OBD2 port and it tracks how many miles you drive, what times you drive (kinda like phone peak hours), and it tracks how many sudden stops you make! Haha! I think this is great, especially for those that can't drive (you know who you are...if not watch more tosh.0)! :)

So what happens when they see that you drive all over the country and frequently at triple digit speeds?

Wonder if they ding you for saying it's a classic car and you only drive 2500 miles per year and then you go over that?

It says they don't but we should test it. ;) Plug it in and do some 140 MPH runs. I BET they say they don't but figure out the times you drive 9:30am to 9:45am and you drove 45 miles, I'm sure they could calculate your speed. ;)

Well, the actual speed is an OBD2 monitored thing right?

I would bet they collect data on everything they can...

They may not use it (or they may) but they probably collect it...

Mark my words, it's a foot in the door.:)

It won't be long every insurance company will have them and you will have to use them. The money back now is just to get people to fall for it. It will be a law soon.

Just like when they first came out with seat belt laws, at first they couldn't pull you over for not wearing a seat belt, I knew that wouldn't last. There's more money in that than catching a car thief or murderer.

Remember when they came out with cable TV? The reasoning was you have to pay for it because there were no commercials to pay for it.:)

Yep, a foot in the door.:D

+1 @ Bill...

Ahh yes, cradle to grave safety...

oddly, seat belt laws were a long contested thing here in Mass...

Progressive can go straight to hell if they think I'd ever put one of those in my car. Just like OnStar: I'd insist it be completely be disabled and removed before I'd ever buy a GM car.

You'd never be able to easily get onstar out of a GM, it's part of the central computer whatever thingy...

I've always wondered if you just removed the sat antenna if that would disable it...

We've had stolen cars that are equipped with OnStar be able to be recovered because of it, however, when the person doesn't pay for the service, OnStar says they don't have tracking abilities and can't locate the car via GPS. (not to say they aren't providing the government your coordinates)

Anyway remember the wire tapping case with the FBI and OnStar?

I believe the outcome was that everything the FBI recorded was considered inadmissible because by using the OnStar to listen in, the OnStar couldn't be used to call out, or in case of emergency, and it violated the terms of the OnStar contract.

I guess you missed where it says it will in fact record vehicle speed...

"What information does the Snapshot device collect?
The Snapshot device collects:

Time of day and vehicle speed, which helps determine how many miles you drive and how often you make sudden stops."

It states later in the FAQs that it won't use vehicle speed to compare to speed limits. SUUUUURE
