Question gen 1

On a gen 1, if you drive your car without the plastic headlight , full width cover, and the chrome eyebrow, that holds it on, what ill effect might it have. If driving in the rain, I can see the headlights getting flooded. I think it would make a difference in the air movement in the area behind the lights. I'd like to know what you guys think. Thanks

Seems like the plastic light covers have somewhat of an effect on light diffusion, especially at night. Something like using a flashlight to drive. Just my opinion

might allow too much air under the hood lip which might promote hood delamination...which if you've ever seen it happen on a gen 1, is nasty and could cause a wreck. That plastic strip has a rubber "filler" to seal any air OUT from under the hood lip.





OR are you talking about the large plastic piece that has the flip-up headlight access panels? (see missing in photo)The piece that the hood slide-to-open rod anchored to it and covers the hood latch area?

That piece helps guide the air through the ac condenser and radiator...without it the air may not pass *through* the radiator as designed by aerodynamicists.

I was wondering if without the light cover, and chrome strip, would driving in the rain soak the headlights.

it should not...as long as the housings are still sealed after all these years. There is a water barrier seal on the headlight bulb socket itself to keep air out to prevent internal condensation so as long as the lens-to-body of light housing seal is good, they should not allow water in.

I sold a guy a set of LSC's, and 7 months later he said he was sanding the lens using a spray bottle for water, and light got lots of moisture in it, left side ok. Got the light back and pressure tested it, no leaks. I sealed it, not holding back on sealant, and it tested good. Now a few months later the left one is full of moisture, he said it had been raining. He sent the light and I found a pin hole leak. The amount of moisture looked like it was soaked with a pressure washer. 2 week later he said he has moisture in the right one again, it's on the way. The one I have now still has the vent cap on it. I'm just trying to figure out what's happening to these lights. I've done a lot of lights, and this is the only ones that I've had a problem with. I was helping another guy with a gen 2 leaking, and found a surprise. The signal bulb has a double 0 ring gasket where the plug goes in. We found the leak coming through the bulb socket where it plugs in. Put a piece of tape over it, and leak gone. I can see these o ring gaskets getting lost when unplugging the lights. I've seen headlight housings on many vehicles turn in to fish tanks from condensation alone. gen 1's are particularly prone to it due to the compact size of the housing. Good find...that blue seal is the moisture seal I was talking about. I also see broken tabs which is very common...hard to keep the bulb "sealed" when there is nothing holding it in but love.
