Selecting a new and better fuel pump

Hi all of my car club peeps, I'm thinking about buying an Aeromotive 340LPH Stealth fuel pump (# 11142). I've done research and know it went into a 98' Cobra and 1 or 2 Mark's have it as well. I know about the Focus green top and my still get it. I have some future plans for the Duke! My question is what mods did you do to make it fit?? I bought an extra fuel basket from Carlos to work with. Thanks for your kind advice, Mark

There is one more thing to consider and it’s something I need a definitive answer for myself.

If you are pumping and using more fuel, there may not be enough returned to the basket and it could run dry.

I am running an SVT Focus pump, Vortech V2, 42lb injectors and a KB boost a pump and I believe the occasional one second loss of power I experience at the track is from fuel starvation.

There are many posts out there suggesting drilling holes in the basket so fuel can enter it that way. However, no 2 posts I have read agree on what size, how many and the location of the holes.

Most seem to like the front of the basket. This seems to make sense as the rear would allow the fuel to run out during acceleration.

There must be an arraignment that would still hold fuel in the basket if you go around a corner with less than ½ a tank yet let enough fuel in during hard acceleration to avoid starvation.

Could someone please shed some light on this issue?

I wonder if you could put a couple small tesla valves on the bottom. It'd keep fuel from coming out, but allow it to get sucked into the basket.

The Aeromotive pump is a decent fit. Keep in mind there are two types of basket manifolds that were installed in Gen2 tanks (as the sending units were shipped with two different pumps - supplier issue I imagine) . One allows for that pump to fit without any modifications to the manifold, and the other requires trimming of the pump outlet, and other misc tweaks.

This pump was good for 590 rwhp with the addition of BAP.

Now, if you want the focus pump (which is probably enough for your plans ???, there is a steeda branded unit available for cheap. http://www.ebay.com/itm/171670250947

This has been a problem since the late 90s LOL.

Drilling holes in the basket is not the way to go about it. If you do, it doesn't matter how you drill them, the pump will starve for fuel on long right hand turns and low fuel levels (less than half tank.
Even with the addition of a custom baffle, I've seen them starving. This is due to the far right location of the pump assembly.

However, I've had good luck with modifying the venturi flow built into the basket with my current Walbro 465LPH pump. Obviously it moves a low of fuel, and without modification it would empty the basket while idling. By enlarging the venturi and plumbing the pump to it with a T (just like stock basket hat does it) it's working great right now on a 400rwhp N/A engine.

Of course the fuel supply line was updated as well. If you're using stock lines, and stock fuel rails (with a cobra or stock intake), then that migth be a problem as well, especially if you're close to 400rwhp.

Thanks for the input Jeremy, I bought that steeda fuel pump. It does not have the pigtail connection with it. Can I buy one from Ford? Also, I'm not sure I understand your basket mods. I have pics posted with the basket I bought. can you elaborate please. How do you take off the hose's without destroying them?
Thanks MarkIMG_20150826_192408758.jpgIMG_20150826_192413412.jpgIMG_20150826_192448328.jpg

The manifold differences play a role with a taller pump like the Aeromotive.

Focus/Steeda pump won't require any mods, but compare the pump height to the one you remove from the basket.

You have the taller pump manifold in those pics you posted.

I'd just use your original basket and swap the pump into that seeing as the corrugated tubing has been cut on this one.

I imagine Ford will have the pigtail. 03-05 Aviator, and all Focus cars use the same pigtail. There's gotta be a Motorcraft number for it.

Mark, while you have apart take the time to replace the sender, I used 2001 foucs and flipped the wires so they read correctly.
