*sigh* Transmission Blew Up and lost 3rd and 4th

#91 or #107?
J, Go drive the car.
When I lost my transmission on the freeway I only had 1st and 2nd gear. I let the car set until the new transmission came (about 2 days, It was in the mail). Went to drop the car off at my friend place and I had all the gears working. Weird.
Unless the tranmission is making noise I would not drive it.

T-6060 is the way to go. DONT GET THE T-56. Hate my transmission in the CTS-V. Always locking out gears.

Part #91 on previous parts schematic... 4R70W/AODE Intermediate Stub Shaft

Yours probably resembles this...

No 3rd or 4th = burnt direct clutch or broken stub shaft

From the manual...

Stub Shaft

The stub shaft transfers power from the turbine shaft to the planet carrier (through the direct clutch) during third and fourth gear operation.

...

Apply Components

There are eight apply devices used to drive or hold the planetary gearset members. The following is a description of each apply component.

Band--Overdrive

The overdrive band holds the reverse clutch drum stationary in fourth gear and in manual range second gear. This action causes the reverse sun gear to be held in these ranges.

Band--Low and Reverse

The low and reverse band holds the pinion carrier stationary in reverse. It is also applied in first gear, manual 1 range, to provide engine braking.

Clutch--Forward

The forward clutch couples the input shaft to the forward sun gear in first, second and third gears.

Clutch--Direct

The direct clutch couples the input shaft to the planet carrier (through the stub shaft) in third and fourth gears.

Clutch--Reverse

The reverse clutch couples the input shaft to the reverse sun gear. It is applied in reverse range only.

Clutch--Intermediate

The intermediate clutch works with the intermediate one-way clutch to hold the reverse sun gear stationary in second gear. The intermediate clutch remains applied in third and fourth gears, but does not transmit power.

Clutch--Intermediate One-Way

The intermediate one-way clutch is a roller clutch that works with the intermediate friction clutch to hold the reverse sun gear stationary in second gear during acceleration. This one-way clutch freewheels in third gear and during coasting in second gear, (D) and D ranges.

Clutch--Planetary (Low) One-Way

The planetary (low) one-way clutch is a roller clutch that holds the pinion carrier stationary in first gear, ((D) and D ranges), during automatic coasting downshifts into first gear ((D) and D ranges), it freewheels so that there is no engine braking.

Good **** JP....being that my transmission is grumbling/banging, I would say that I its not twisted, its completely snapped. I'm not going to drive it Glenn, I drove it almost 5 miles home....in second gear.

You better start pulling more people over and giving tickets so you can get a raise :D

Yeah I have first but it would neutral out and bang/clunk if I let it try to shift to 3rd. So I stuck it manual 2nd all the way home.

Got my transmission back today. JP you were right! :) and a sad face for money spent :(

Gonna slap it in after work the next couple days. Don't have my drive shaft because it's still in my Dad's car while we had his balanced and u-joints replaced. Hopefully be on the road by the end of next week!

Smoked the splines on the forward drum.

And snapped the shaft....

What's required to swap a t6060...besides time and money?

Check this out.

Got it all together yesterday and drove it to work today. Drives/shifts much better than before and feels more sturdy. Ended up doing a complete rebuild because my builder found a few issues with how it was put built before. The shaft was replaced with a new Ford part because the issues he found are what contributed to it's failure. Therefor he didn't feel the need for a hardened one. Also found a few burnt clutches as well so I opted to put it back together right. Cost me $1,048 with taxes and a 4R70W2 converter. Labor was free ofcourse. I guess my back paid a lil. ;)

I wonder what issues he found exactly. It was put together by Ford, or whoever builds test transmissions for ford. Trans builders are like contractors, they always blame each other ;)

Apparently two snap rings were installed backwards and because of that one was broken. One of the thrust washers was installed backwards (in the pump?), and he didn't like the JMod because the accumulator didn't have any spring at all installed. With no spring, the broken/backwards snap ring in the forward drum, the added line pressure from the tune, and the supercharger, he said all those accumulated into the shaft breaking.

He wasn't blaming, he was telling me what failed and his opinion why. Not to mention, the parts don't magically turn the wrong way when something in the transmission breaks.
