Actually, traction assist was an option on Gen 1 Mark VIII's.
[/div]

Correct. It also works different from the Gen2 traction control.

Thanks for the replies. How would you know if you had it as a option on a 93.

JP your advice has been instumental in my selection of a mark and the information you share is great for all of us.

how does the gen1 and gen2 track asst differ? Im pretty sure the gen one works off of brakes. Doesnt it apply the brakes to the wheel/s that are spinning?

Tom:
You would have a trac control on/off button beside the cig-lighter.
David:
Gen1s apply the brake on the spinning wheel, but only up to 30mph.
Gen2s apply the brake and retard engine timing depending upon speed,
are referred to as all speed trac control for that reason.

The Gen1 traction control could be switched on/off via a switch on the console next to the rear defrost switch. The Gen2 traction control is deselected via the message center menu.

when you turn the trac asst off in the 2nd gen mark does it stay off untill turned back on or does it turn it self back on when the car is started?

I'm sure it resets itself - default is on.

There is someone here who was working on a mod for that very purpose.

TC is practically useless if you know how to drive. I want to default mine OFF on a Gen1.
[/div]

I don't drive like I did in my younger/dumber days, but I wonder how I would even attempt some of those maneuvers with things like ABS, traction control and the newer 'vehicle stability' programs.

On the Gen 1, are the sensors on the back the same as on the back? Mine the light on the button always says off and does nothing when I pus the button (always lights off) but I was told that sometimes you can clean the sensors and that will fix the problem. I was planning to rotate to tires today anyways so I thought I would clean everything up while I had the wheels off. The front is easy to see and clean up but the back I'm not seeing the same thing, so I'm not sure if someone changed the setup, took something out or if its different in the back than in the front. I have never been a big fan of traction control (assist as in this car) or ABS but since this is equipped with these features and I like the car so much I would like everything to work as its suppose to, but I'm lost on this car... I'm use to working on the older GMs that ive always had, trying get my self re educated and converted to a ford/Lincoln man... lol thanks....

The rear ABS sensors are on the inboard end of the halfshafts mounted on the outside of each side of the carrier housing for the differential.

The rear sensors are mounted inboard on the differential, easy to get to.

Oops, sorry, JP beat me to it.

Awesome, thank you both, that makes a lot more sense to me so see it. I just finished putting everything back together for the night, was getting cold out in the garage and didn't want to spend anymore time out there today. I get it out there this week and check out the back now that I know what I'm looking for. Thank you again.

Also, now that I know where these are. Have you heard of this being the case with any other cars that they just need to be cleaned up? I have checked and don't have any other lights on (checked the bulbs even to make sure that they are good)... the only light on is the one on the button saying off. Thanks again, you guys are always a big help and I greatly appreciate it.

I've heard cleaning them helps sometimes but I've never had luck doing that.

I'd suggest taking it to the auto parts store and get the codes read, or read them yourself:

On a gen 1 you can easily pull the ABS codes yourself with a piece of wire.

The Anti lock test connector is located inside the headlight access door on the passenger side.
It's in a red plastic holder. Push it out of the holder and hold it facing you with 2 terminals on top, and 4 on the bottom.
They would be numbered 1, 2, then 3,4,5,6 on the bottom.
Take a wire and jump 4 and 5 together, then turn the iginition key to the on position and count the blinks of the ABS light for the codes.:)

Got to love it... I had been told about the code reading a while back and thought what I ready a while back I might have just ready wrong and wasn't doing it right so I had a friend helping me out and I asked him to check the bulbs to make sure they were ok and that wasn't the reason I wasn't getting the code readings. He had told me all the bulbs were good so when I ready you guys responses, I went out and gave it another try and still no lights for the codes... so took things apart to check the bulbs and turns out he was right, all the bulbs that were in there are good, however the bulb for the ABS isn't even in there, lol... Got to get your information first hand sometimes. So I will get the bulb in in the morning and see what happens then.. Maybe now I'll actually be able to get somewhere.

ok, So I got impatient and did it tonight anyways because I knew it was going to keep me from sleeping :p Anyways I got quite a few codes, looked them up and I'm not sure if they make sense because a couple of the codes come up with the same issue. So here are my Codes and what I found. I'm not sure what some of them mean but I am assuming a few of them are telling me I need to replace sensors.

17 - Reference Voltage Problem (Have no Idea what that could mean specifically)
31 - Left Front Wheel Sensor (Assuming that means it needs to be replaced?)
32 - Right Front Wheel Sensor (Assuming this needs to be replaced as well?)
35 - Left Front Wheel Sensor Erratic Output (?)
63 - Pump Motor Speed Sensor (?)
75 - Left Front Wheel Sensor Erratic Output (?)

One of the things that makes me wonder if I have the right meanings for the numbers is that 35 and 75 say the same thing... Thank you again for all your help here, I actually feel like I'm starting to get somewhere now with the help :)
