Air Compressors

RE: Air Compressors

I don't know about central pneumatic. Harbor freight tends to carry some really cheap brands. Functional, but generally not stuff i'd buy for heavy duty use. I have a harbor freight welder that works fine, but i use it once a month. If i used it every day i'd have bought a better one. An air compressor is something he may want to use every day, especially if he starts modding his car or anything.

If you want to buy one that will never have to be replaced, you're looking at about a grand, but it doesn't sound like he needs something that good.

I'd at least get a standup with a 20+ gallon tank. And try to find one that'll do 140 or 150 psi. Check out Home Depot and Sears too.

That should be a good kit for general purpose repair and whatnot. It's a bit more, but if it's going to be used a lot it's a better buy. Husky air tools are made by Campbell Hausfeld, and i believe Autozone carries their stuff too, as well as a bunch of other places, so you can shop around.

edit: linky no worky. click power tools, then air compressor, then it's the $300 one at the top of the page.

RE: Air Compressors

No, we don't have tools yet. Those do look nice, but if I spend 300, I'm gonna have to check with Hubby 1st (we were trying to avoid that hee hee).

When it comes to tools it is better not to skimp on quality. You can get a bargain compressor for $100 only to have it last a short time, or get a qulity $300 one and have it last years.

Yeah, I know. Maybe I could tell Mike that will get you out of the garage quicker. }(

RE: Air Compressors

I saw that compressor last month for that price. I am going to wait till spring and thats the one I am going to buy. It looks like a great deal, especially with the tools incl. I can't wait!!!! :7
I am going to sit outside and time how fast I can change wheels :7 }( }( come on spring!!!!!

So you want Sharon to "do" your "front-end" with airtools. Kinky, you are; something else to not tell hubby about!:+

I have a H F brand pancake compressor; it works great, but don't use it everyday. Being cheaper, it's made with cast iron engine parts, which makes it a little heavier than others, but it performs fine.

RE: Air Compressors

BTW, if you are going to use it often, get a bigger tank. It keeps from cycling the engine on and off to fill the tank, as preassure drops. A small tank is fine for occasional use.

RE: Air Compressors

Well, apparently Hubby wants one too, but not til spring. He has this idea that he's somehow going to be able to keep the garage clean enough to park his truck in there in the winter. ROFL.

He's wrong. We'll work on him. I don't know how much everyone needs it around here, but the kid says he can't wait til spring. I told him to go to Sears Hardware tomorrow and see what they have in stock, see if there are any other specials going on. Thanks for the input.

RE: Air Compressors

OK, Hubby and the Kid are theoretically at Sears right now. Some big sale today - an additional 10% off before 10AM. I don't know - once I told him that Mark was coming over today to work on his car, he seemed much more eager to get it. :7

We'll see what they come home with.

RE: Air Compressors

If you want to run some power tools you'll need at least a 20 gal tank and 125PSI with a separate regulator for the tools. Fran got me one last year as a Christmas gift at Home Depot for $295 and it came with a big toy chest full of air tools. 25 gal/150 psi, I love this thing!

If you do get the air wrench be sure to buy torque sticks for the wheels so you can use it without overtorqueing the lugs. Well worth the $$. I got the set pictured here but found it locally for about $75 http://www.torquestick.com/cart/customer/product.php?productid=27&cat=0&page=

RE: Air Compressors

If you're not overzealous you can run the nuts on without torque sticks then use a torque wrench on them. That's what i do.

I got a kit somewhat like that a few years ago, and the impact didn't quite cut it. It works fine, but it's not that strong, so i got a better one on ebay.

RE: Air Compressors

We got the one from Sears that Steve listed, there was an additional 10% off today before 10AM. Thanks for all the help and input, yeah we'll need more tools now.

We haven't used it on the cars, and unfortunately we're going to have to do something about the electricity cause it pulls too much power and kept blowing the fuse.

But it's pretty. :D Maybe now I should get me some DRs.

And I also just figured out how pitiful I am. Instead of oh, new carpeting or drapes or painting the inside of our white trash home, I keep telling them to get more stuff for the garage. ::nono::

RE: Air Compressors

LOL.

An air compressor is a great thing to have around.

Do you have circuit breakers, or fuses? Either way, you should be able to just put a larger one in there, but to be safe/legal you should run a thicker gauge wire on that circuit too. How far is your panel from the garage?

Circuit breaker. It seems that all our outdoors, family room and garage are all on the same 15 amp circuit. The panel isn't too far away, but the people who lived here before us did some very odd wiring. I think Hubby's rewired some stuff for us before, and he's gonna check with his dad and they can hopefully get it taken care of.

We were all a bit confused when Mark came in from the garage earlier today asking what he needed to do to get the electricity to work out there. ::wtf::

RE: Air Compressors

Get an outlet out there with its own 20 amp circuit. Your panel should have extra capacity, but don't let hubby do it, get an electrician so it is done right.

RE: Air Compressors

Ok. I read all of these posts, looked at all of the suggestions, and finally scanned the separate power outlets. Ok. Now.
DOes my wife need one of these? I assume this is for tools, correct?
I thought air compressors were for inflating bike tires and beach balls.:p

Of course I'm kidding, though I wouldn't have a clue on how to use one. 5 thumbs you know. Congrats on your "investment.":7
