ok I have a 98 mark 8.I am having an overheating problem. My mileage is over 130000 with no water visible on the dipstick, but plenty of oil.I have no cooling fan at anytime including during startup or with ac on.Upper and lower radiator hoses feel hot along with the radiator.Oddly no heat at the heater core hoses, they feel empyty or full of air.Specifivcly where is the thermostat located. Also my 40 amp fuse is good and the fan spins freely.I will get a multi meter tomorrow to test for voltage at the fan.Where is the "LLC"?

Welcome! :)

If your fan does not turn on with the AC, the fan is bad or not getting voltage. Let's get that taken care of first!

Ok I tested no voltage to the fan.Wheres that control module at?Its something like VCRM MODULE OR .It says its in the right wheel well but where???Any Idea how much they cost or best place to get one???

It should be behind the grill in front of the radiator just slightly off center to the drivers side. It is a brick sized module with cooling fins.

Are you sure.I looked and only found a 1.5 inch by 1.5 inch module on the left.I checked my service manual and it says its in the left wheelwell.possible behind an inner fenderwell i guess like the fuel filter.

I guess I'm not sure.

I have a '93 and a '96, both Gen1s.

I suppose the Gen2 could very well be different. Unfortunately my DVD service manual covering '97 and up is on the fritz. :(

I just checked my 96-00 DVD. According to it, the 98's VLCM is still in the same location that driller described. If you remove the plastic cover around the hood latch and look down, you should see it in front of the radiator. It's a silver finned brick-like thing located slightly to the right of center. I had to replace it on my '93 because of the same problem.

BTW, the manual did point out an electrical connector related to the VLCM which is in the left fenderwell, which is probably the source of the confusion.

I found it in front of the right tire behind the inner fenderwell. What a pain.
Is this a common problem?or should I be looking at a PCM module it sends the dat to the vcrm module?
I dont have a reader but I know I have 12 volts to the vcrm module but no voltage at my fan.If I jump 12 volts to my fan it works.Has anyone else had this problem? What was your cause?

You say you had the same problem.that makes me feel better about my diagnosis.i cant justify buying a reader or paying 80-100 plus tow charges to get a diagnosis at a shop.

Aw CRAP!!! I put in the used module and still no cooling fan.Do I need to disconnect the battery for a while to clear codes?Or is it time to get a reader???This S#CKS!!!HELP....................

If you need a reader just to claer the codes....go to an auto parts store. Many will read the codes for you. So when they do, just tell then to reset. No sense in buying a codereader for a one-time shot.

UPDATE:I installed the new mudule and the now I have power to the fan but it turns slow.I pulled the fan and tested the resistance. Its thru the roof .Obviously this was the original caue of my module failure, excess load.I need a fan now.I found out 1998 are year specific, that kind s@cks.Anybody got a used one???

Drill out the rivet heads, remove the fan blade, replace fan on new motor, reassemble with suitable bolts and locking nuts - pretty much a "Do-It-Yourself" project. :wink2-green

it's easy smeasy!
DIY!

you have a couple of options.
1. get a fan and shroud from a junkyard, spend 50-100 dollars and just pull yours and put the junkyard fan in.. I've done this three times in 300,000 miles.

2. Autozone sells the fan motor it's around 100.00, then you would follow the "drill the rivets", "install fan motor", secure with bolts" techique as Driller posted. { we did this on Tiffs car)

Its alot easier to just pull the entire assembly and replace with another one..
In and out in less than 30 minutes...

Replacing the fan motor takes the 30 minutes listed above PLUS 30 minutes to an hour to drill rivets, dig up correct bolts, and put it all back together.

I just replaced my fan last week, after it smoked.....
3 fans.. 378,000 miles... not TOO BAD rougly 125,000 miles per fan.
Your mileage may vary.
