New Intake Manifold

97' Town Car. I have to get the intake manifold replaced monday at the dealer cost about $800.00. I tryed to find a local guy to do it but when I told them that it was a 32 Valve head they said no thanks. So off to the dealer on monday and I will let you all know how it go's.

There's no such thing as a 32 V Town Car unless you installed your own Mark VIII or Cobra engine in your car!!!

All Town Cars use 16V SOHC 4.6s.

Yes, the Ford intake manifold is expensive, but there's a few aftermarket copies that are just as good for half the price.

Up here in Canada, that manifold retails for ~$660 from Ford. Our dealership's jobber supplier can get an equivalent manifold for ~$290. We let our retail customers choose which one they want. Most of our private Lincoln owners want the genuine Ford, but it goes without saying, our commercial limo/taxi people go the cheaper route.

Labour time is 3.5 to 4 hours, by the way.

I Bought a new replacement from NAPA for $220.00 for my wifes 99 CV and it isn't rocket science to replace it just takes a few metric tools alot of contact cleaner and patience.
good luck

32 Valve V8

32 Valve V8

When the dealer decoded my town cars VIN # he told me that it had a 32 Valve V8 rated 305 horse power and required additional parts for the intake manifold replacment. He also stated that the head gaskets and valve train were near perfect and almost never need replacment. I am taking his word for it. My engine cover is also labled 32 Valve intec V8. The Year is 97. I have a few odd features that I have tryed to find on several other sites maybe you can help. The car is silver frost with a gray bottom. I have very odd rims I have never seen them on any other TC. My ride height also seem's to be higher than most TC's I have seen. The only badge on the car is the signature badge on the front fenders. I also have the rear lights under the trunk. The mfg date is 8/97. Do I have and odd ball or just a package with no badging on it. Help me out guys. This is my first town car.

Special Production Run

Special Production Run

After about an hour on the phone and several calls I have figured out that I have an odd ball car. In 97' the last few production TC's were all the same and they are as follows.
Fully Loaded Signature
Moon Roof
CD Changer
Heated Seats
Handling Package
Dual Pipes
32 Valve V8
4 Speed Trani
Lincoln told me that there were 100 of these cars made. I have no question that this is correct.

You may have a problem with the dealer then, because Frankie was a Ford mechanic for many years.

Vin#

Vin#

I mean no harm as this is the information the 2 dealers gave me I will be happy to post my vin#. I have no experience with these cars. As I said before this is my first town car. My Vin Number is as follows.

New Info

New Info

After looking for pics of my car or something like it. My rims are like MarkVIII rims. Something like them but not exactly the same. I will try to get pics asap ok. As soon as I get it back I will snap some pics of the car. So all of you know that I am telling the truth. Like I said I purhcased the car for a daily driver not knowing what I had purchased. My intake looks just like any other town car but I notice the intake on the MarkVIII does not look at all the same. I also tryed to decode my own VIN# on ford fleet site and it gives me an error message. I will post pics I promise you all that. So you dont think I am crazy. Or for that matter making this crap up. I just wanted to buy a good car and learn more about it thats why I joined this site. And the site has helped me alot. I know more about my car then just about any one I know. So please bare with me while we try and figure the rest of this out.

It's easy to tell a SOHC from a DOHC visually.

There were supposedly a fleet of '92? Town Cars as a test bed for the 4.6L DOHC that was introduced in the '93 Mark VIII.

1LN = Manufacturer Code(Lincoln)
L = Vehicle Restraint System(Driver and Passenger AirBags)
M82 = Model(???)
V = Engine Code(4.6L DOHC???)
7 = Check Digit
V = Year Code(1997)
Y = Plant Code(Wixom, Michigan assembly plant)
748122 = Production Sequence Number

Couple places I tried listed the VIN # it as invalid??? It should be a "W" in the Engine Code digit? That would then be:

1997 LINCOLN/TOWN CAR SIG/TOUR ED/J N/4.6L V8 SFI OHV

VIN NUMBER DECODING

The dealer that is doing the work was able to provide me with a casting number from the heads and block. If this will help assure you that this information is correct. Block#F6LE-AA Crank#F2LE-AG-27D Head#F6OE-AB

OK, now I'm really puzzled!!

I ran the serial number through Ford's OASIS (Online Automotive Service Information System) and got back, "ID not valid- No Match Found".

If I decode the number myself, this is what it gives me:
1LN = Lincoln North American production
L = restraints: seatbelts, 2 airbags
M = specific line: Lincoln for North American Sales
82 = series: Town Car, Signarure Series
V = engine YES, V IS THE IDENTIFIER FOR A 4.6 DOHC 4V ENGINE! Every other Town Car I've ever seen has a W in the 8th position, designating 4.6L 2V!
7 = "breaker digit" that is ALWAYS 9 on Town Cars, but is a 7 in your case!
V = year: 1997
Y = plant: Wixom, Michigan
48122 = build sequence pruduction number

I honestly don't know what you have here.

It's got to be something really rare if it's not even on Ford's OASIS database!

Are there any Ford/Lincoln history nuts out there that can help???

The olny one I can think of would be Sandy from New Jersey, but he left this board a few years ago...he seems to know everything about certain motor car companies and what they made....

The puzzling part to me is the INTAKE. Yes, the 4.6L SOHC had the infamous intake issue - I've never heard of a DOHC with an intake problem.

It would be nice to see pics of the engine bay. :rolleyes-green:

We pulled the VIN through our Parts Network System and got an ID!

Yes, PNS lists this VIN as having a 32V DOHC engine, and here's a useful piece of information:

Your Town Car is a "Signature Series - Diamond Anniversary, Jack Nicklaus Touring Edition."

So... I stand corrected. Let me take my foot out of my mouth and retract my first post!

Wow...Frankie was wrong.

This makes me question my entire belief system. Where's Tom Cruise...I need to look into Scientology. ;)

Now that we know, do people really associate a car that can go 160 mph with Jack Nicklaus? My golf-playing dad drives a Dodge Caravan and goes 65 mph in the slow lane. They should have called it the Jerome Bettis edition.

Thank You Guys

Thank You Guys

I knew I wasnt going crazy. So I need a little help here now that we all know that car is really here. I took it in for a coolant leak. I havent posted in a few days as I have been sick with the Flu sorry. I am going to pick the car up tonight. The repair is finished it was actually done yesterday I just did not feel up to picking it up yesterday. Can anyone tell me what this car might be worth and where it came from. Right now I just dont know who knows what about my car. Lincoln tells me that they were made as the last of the production run. I dont think they were. Is there anyone out there that can give me more information about where my car came from.

Thanks Guy's
Nick
