If nothing else, remove battery ground for 10 minutes. Is it OBD II or OBD I ? If it is II, take it to Auto Zone and they will attach the scanner and tell you the trouble code. Have them turn off the light. Usually a no charge service.

On Board Diagonistics. You should have a sticker under your hood that tells you. Also under dash, below steering whel, there would be a computer connection. Do you have owner's manual? Check there.

Roy,

Welcome to the board. The "service engine" light doesn't mean you need to get a "tune up". It means you're having something fail(i.e. a sensor/meter) and you NEED to have it checked out. Your car is a 96 so that makes it an OBD2 vehicle, which means you have to take it in to get the "codes pulled". You do NOT want to reset it, you want to have is inspected at your local mechanic and go from there.

If you go to an independent mechanic it will be cheaper than the dealership, and if you just tell them you want the codes pulled, you can come back here and give us the code numbers and we'll help you out. If you're not mechanically inclined enough to do the repairs, its probably better to have the shop fix it :)

The light could be on because of ANYTHING.....a loose gas cap, or a bad MAP sensor, your transmission going bad, a mis-fire of the engine etc.....

BTW....disconnecting the battery for 10-20 minutes on an OBD2 vehicle will clear the light, but the codes will still be stored and if the issue arrises again the light will come on much sooner than before. You can also have codes stored EVEN if the light it OFF.
