Removing your Air Silencers/Custom Cold Air Intake

J

OCCUPY LoD :)
Ok, below are pictures of all the pieces of the air silencer
puzzle, remove these and you're good to go!

When you remove this piece,(which is at the back side of the
top of the engine and is held on by a crimp hose clamp) you'll
have to find a cap of some sort to "plug" the hole with(home depot has it, and it
measures 1 1/2 inches and fits over the hole and tightends
down with a hose clamp) OR you can use some of the material from the "elephant ear" silencer to mold a plug.

Next down the line towards the front of the car is the
"elephant ear"(small triangle piece)which needs to be
grinded off and than you'll have to seal the hole with some JB
Weld and a small plastic piece, or melt the plastic on there.
Just be sure you clean out the tube when you're done, plastic
isn't good for the belly!

Unfortionally I don't have a pic of the "elephant ear, but if
you look at the pic below of the finished copy I hope you can
figure out what the heck I'm refering to....if not....maybe
ask your wife, lol.

Lastly......

Here is the picture of the air silencer in the passenger
fender well, notice the trumpet facing towards the
left....thats where the air is drawn through and thats located
under the passenger headlight.

Here is what my intake setup looks like right now(I KNOW my
filter is dirty, heck my whole engine compartment is filthy,
but the engy cover hides it well, hahah).

I got rid of both upper silencers on the intake tube, I then
removed the one in the fender well. At this point when I had
the airbox out, I noticed the gaping hole behind the headlight
where it would be perfect for fresh cold air to be drawn. So,
I decided to figure out how to run a K&N filter and waalaa,
here you go. I removed the MAF from the stock air box and
then proceeded to remove the MAF Sensor from the alluminum
housing. I than took my die grinder(sawsall/vice would work,
MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE THE SENSOR FIRST) and removed the huge
flat flange that holds the MAF housing to the stock air box.
I smoothed out any imperfections that would cause the K&N to
not fit properly and it was a perfect fit, just slide it on
and tighten the clamp. After that I just installed a little
bit of sheet metal to keep the hot air out and keep the K&N
drawing air from the front and the bottom of the car. Works
great and sounds killer!

Here you can see the gaping hole down into the fender well
where the air compressor is and the air silencer used to be.

Here is a pic of the gaping hole in the radiator core support
just behind the passenger headlight.....plenty of air!

And finally, here is the sheet metal which creates an "ice
box" for the K&N filter.

J i'm glad you got your engine steam cleaned cause all that dirt could not have been good for the top end of your engine...

Good write up.

I was going to ask if you had been driving in the desert with all that dust in there!

Thanks! LMAO....man I got soooo much crap for posting those pics. I have a very BAD habit of being LAZY when it comes to the engine compartment. "Its dirty....*grabs the Black Magic Tire Dressing*....squirt squirt squirt.....ahhh much better." haha The only problem is after about 2 weeks the engine is even dirtier than before, haha.

Serge....I didn't have to steam clean it, we have a pressure washer, I'm just super lazy to spend 5 minutes hooking it up, lol.

Here is a more recent picture :)

Just a note on removing the air silencer for a 2nd gen - I'm glad I removed mine, but I definitely noticed that the car got a little louder (duh) and she idles just a teeny bit more roughly. I mean, before the air silencer was removed, sometimes I'd be at a stoplight and would have no idea that the car was actually running she was so quiet and smooth. Now that's not an issue.

Watch out if you are going to use a pressure washer on your engine. We've had a number of people end up with real bad water caused problems by them.

For sure Bud....why do you think it was so dirty!!? I didn't feel like tearing off everything to blow out my spark plug holes, haha!

I removed mine too, didn't know there was more than the lower one, and I don't notice much of anything, but I got that whole part. Anyone wanna buy it? :D

Lol! Paint Pepsi on it and go recycle it, haha!

If you have a Gen1 there are THREE total in the intake tube!
