TB cleaning?

Hey guys, it's been a long time - believe it or not the mark is still going, maybe not as strong, but going, nonetheless.

I did a quick search for tb cleaning and didn't find much, I guess I should have put in "throttle body" instead of tb maybe, anyhoo what the issue is the gas pedal sticks and 1st thought is the tb is gummed up or needs a cleaning.

Any thought from anyone that may have gone through it before.
I was going down 75 and a piece of vinyl house siding, at least that's what I thought it was, got kicked up and hit at just the right angle under the driverside and almost ripped the gas lines off, tore 'em out of the mounts, and they hang a bit now....but the gas pedal started to stick after this. I don't believe they are related but stranger things have happened.

Well I hope everybody that I knew back then are still here and everything is going well. & for the ones I don't know....good to meet you. :)

Now that I'm back in town I need to catch up.
Also I LIKE the new coat of paint the site has.... it has been a long time.
Thanks guys

Hey Casey.....do you have a Gen 1 or 2? I'll continue where Serge could have entered some information that is helpful for repairing:cool-blue:. You can test the gas pedal "theory" by popping the hood and finding where the throttle cable attaches to the throttle body.(Gen 1 on the drivers side front of the TB by the firewall and has 2 cables on it/Gen 2 middle of the engine more towards the passengerside on the TB and has 2 cables)

You can manually open the TB with your hand by pulling back on the cable end towards the drivers side of the car. If this "feels" ok, than most likely its your throttle cable. If it still feels "sticky" than its time for a TB cleaning. If you need a cable, you can get a new one online from RockAuto, or if you want to go used(a lot cheaper?) contact Jamies98LSC on these forums, hes a M8 dismantler in FL.

(DON'T mind the circle) You can see the throttle cable at the far middle right of this picture where it goes infront of the air intake tube to the TB.(Gen1)

(DON'T mind the supercharger, lol) You can see the throttle cable on the TB at the end of the intake tube.(Gen2)

When/if you clean the TB, use ACTUAL TB cleaning stuff because brake cleaner will remove some of the "coating" inside the TB. Also spray some PB Blaster on the outside of the TB at the linkage.

Thanks guys, I got my head under the hood now, cleaning the air filter and just planning the best route of attack for the broken driverside door handle.

Sorry about the car info, (what happened to the car sig info that used to be there? Do I just need to update it?)
It's a gen 2 '97. Few mods; but one was a BBK 62mm TB; I had just bought the car and anything I could just bolt on.....well, I did.

The cable and pedal both move freely and feel fine. The TB plate seems fine but me moving it by hand & my foot moving it from the inside of the car, I'm sure are not the same amount of force.
I would have thought it'd be cleaner inside that puppy too but it's been a while I guess.
I don't have any TB cleaner in the barn, so I'll wait to get some.

I'm just 3 months into a J.O.B. where I use my car alot and am finding lots of little stuff pop up.
I'll have to see if Jamies98LSC might have a driverside door handle; that's great info, I need alot of stuff.
Thanks again :)

Very nice pic. Very nice indeed.
Man, I've been away too long.

Casey...Jamie will have EVERYTHING you need. Thanks for the car info....when testing that BBK TB make sure you use one finger to push it open(as if the cable is pulling it) because you'll get different leverage issues that may pop up, like you said, different by hand or foot. The Gen2 cable just pops off of the TB so take it off and move it with your hand, see if its frayed inside and causing a bind. It should move with little to NO resistance.

Just a hunch...that BBK TB shaft may be binding up inside...try removing the cable and wiggling the linkage/shaft up and down, side to side. Also try ADDING angles to the linkage when moving it...actually trying to BIND it up, if its loose you'll be able to tell when you feel resistance.

Also...what you're feeling may even be a driveability concern vs. something "mechanical".(i.e. engine hesitation)

It's a definite sticky TB plate, just need t get the cleaner.
Thanks again.

Btw how many peeps we got w/ SC here now?

(A whole stream of 4 letter words meaning happy) Fantastic!!!

You are my new best friend.
I'll call you tomorrow.

*walks away; grinning from ear to ear*

Thanks J! *pats himself on the back*

A mucho grande mondo ultra mega "hey thanks J".
Really, thank you it felt good to be back, is there a point system in place?

You want any PO85RD Menzerna car polish?
Only 6 bottles of the real stuff left. I used to work for a online products wholesaler, I'm sure you've seen the website; I bought out their stock when Menzerna stopped making/shipping PO85RD.

Points system? Lol, I've seen a "karma" system on the Anti-Rice forums...a lot of people were negative, haha.(thats what they get for supporting imports)

I would take you up on the offer, but I don't polish my car, lmao. Talk to Jamie, his black 98 gets washed/waxed everyday, haha.

Well can you help me now.....undo what I did?
I checked the can of tb cleaner and it say not for use on F.I. cars.
Wished I'd read the whole can before using.

When you go t give it gas it bogs down like there's not enough choke, ya know starting your riding mower, after you just get it going if you give it to much gas it'll stall, same thing.

All I did was clean the air filter, spray a little of that cleaner in the tb, then wipe it out, polish the glass, seal it, and do the tires.

Ask if you need any more info.
Well my girl has to stay home tomorrow so I guess It's for the best, I'll take her drag butt slow truck.

Check engine light? I bet you left the MAF sensor unplugged :) The TB cleaner won't "hurt" the TB per say, its just not good for the coating on it, BUT, you have an aftermarket BBK TB and they don't come with the same coating that the factory TB's have so no worries there.

If you didn't leave the MAF sensor unplugged, you need to get the TB dirty again, grab some dog poop and smear it in there, that should help. :roll_over: LMAO just kidding!

Well J you passed the test. Great job!!

I mean come on, who would forget to plug in the MAF senor, not me. :|
I just wanted to see how your troubleshooting skills were.....

Yeah, er, well....anyhoo thanks again mate. You ripped right through my issues.

Lmao, thanks :) I was going to say, "10 bucks says you left the MAF sensor unplugged!" but I didn't want to be mean!

So......how is the TB now? Better?

Runs like a champ, now that the MAF is....well I mean yeah it ALWAYS ran like a champ - yeah that's it.

To tell you the truth I didn't even notice if the pedal still sticks, which most likely means it doesn't.

Your in Cali right?
I can't send you that PO85RD anyway, your state won't let it in, they call it contraband.....crazy state Cali is.

Lmao! Don't tell anyone but when I visited my relatives in MN, I took a road trip over to Wisconsin to buy some fireworks(stores open ALL year for fireworks). I UPS'd them to myself....3 boxes :) I'm thinking this was before 9/11....but I don't remember.
