98 Conti CD Change Q?

My roomie has a 98 Conti. He purchased a CD changer to put in. But there seems to be no harness. I know everything Mark VIII, but nothing about its little sister. Is this a doable project? Where can one get a harness?

Thanks!

Hmmmm....no FACTORY changer harness right? Anything is "doable", but that would be a tough project.

But all I need is the harness, right? He already plans to hack the console to bits to get the changer in! lol

On the conti the changer goes in the center console. Its a 6-disc, but it is not the same changer. The harnesses are very different. However, the Conti has one head unity for all of them, so changer or not you get changer controls on the head unit.

I know you only need the harness...but most likely the harness isn't seperate from the radio harness. Sooo....a lot of wiring schematics and cutting/soldering. Figure out what Radio he has and I'll get a wiring schematic so we can see how the changer connects.

...and depends on which type console he has...one changer is in the rear of the console on the "big" one. There is a smaller console where the changer is mounted in the dash. At least that's what my '97 CD says.

Well I dunno! I will have to take a look at his crappy Chilton book. From what it appears there is a connection in the back of the head unit and all we needed was the harness. But that is why I started this thread. So in short, to the dumpster it goes with the CD changer.

You know, the best, easiest answer would be to call a FLM auto dismantler. They will(should) know if you can just get the harness....

Bud, there is only the "Full" and "Mini" changers(as per AllData) in 1998 Conti's. There is the regular CD head unit, but its a single disk. The Full changers sits inside the center console, the mini sits in the back of the console facing the rear seats.

Edit.......called the dealer, the CD changer harness is part of the radio harness WHICH is part of the entire dash harness. The changer part of the harness is taped to the dash harness so it IS seperateable, but NOT sold seperately. I'd suggest hitting the junk yard and bring a razor blade knife.

Ahhh....so THAT'S what they meant by full and mini....duhhhhh

So the full is the 6 disk and the mini is a single disk?

Ouch... so FULL harness change - dash comes apart, well the lower.

Hmmmm.. wow.. I will pass it on. Junk yard is best best then since I know he wont go for a full dash harness.

Thanks for the info. I will tell him and let him take it from there. I bet he will make his own harness - crazy electrical engineers :)

Lol! Like I said...get his stereo model and I'll give him a GREAT schematic, way better than any book you guys have.

Well this may change things a bit. Its actually a 96, same year as mine. LOL

This is the model number for the deck: F60F-18C852-BA / 9649

Have the pin-outs? In the back there were two connectors. A flat long one and a square one. There were no additional hook up spots. He is more than willing to spice, cut and whatelse to fit it in. 96 was also in the center console, right?

You'll have to figure out which ones are which or tell me if the radio has NO CD player, or if its already set up for a CD changer or what. The Part number doesn't help.

This is one...

Thanks J !!!!! Its has no built-in CD player, just tape but it has all the CD controls including the source select button for "CD/Tape".

Ok, so its a JBL with a tape and Cd control? Alldata had 6 options for stereos and I wasn't about to post 35 pictures, lol!

Im not sure if its JBL or not. It looks a lot like the one in my Mark, which was JBL. He says its JBL. All I know is it has tape and CD controls!

Ok...tape w/cd controls. His system should/will say JBL on it somewhere if its indeed a JBL.

Either way, the JBL wiring is above, and if he tests for power and such at the wires, he'll figure out which model he has. Like you said....hes an "electrical engineer".
