HOTLNC's Blackstone Report

Check with your local wal-mart. They started carrying Mobil 1 filters. I picked up one for my Vette for $9.60. You can't beat that. Local parts stores charge $14+.

Wal-mart also carries the FL-820 for $3.20 a filter. The best Value for the mark. There is no way you guys need to run Mobil 1 oil filters etc. You're wasting money.

I would just go with the Ford filter/Mobil 1 and change it every 5-7k (if you really like Mobil 1). Or if you're on a budget go with Ford Semi-Synthetic motor oil (motorcraft) wal-mart also has that at $12.xx for 5 quarts you can't go wrong. Change every 5k and the engine will run until 300k unless you got the messed up valve springs.

What? That Max bought a Vette and he's looking for the best deal AND shopping at WalMart? :tongue-pink:

I've quite using Fram filter long ago, mostly based on that and other tear down reports.

And I always change the filter when I change the oil.

The oil report would have been able to detect a bypassed filter (higher insolubles.)

Anyone else notice something strange? :smile-purple:

That is HILLARIOUS!!! Well I should have stopped by my closest stealer and bought an AC Delco gold for $15 while waiting in line. Way to go gang up on a guy trying to save a buck :lol3: . I also picked up Dot 4 synthetic brake fluid for $2.50 a can. GREAT deals at your local china superstore.

OK, the K&N and Mobil 1 oil filters are both made by Champion Labs, they are very similar in design. The difference is the K&N flows a little bit more while the Mobil 1 filters down to a slightly smaller particle. For a performance application, I would always pick the filter that flows more but both are premium oil filters and you can't go wrong with either.

Another thing to consider for our 4.6 DOHC engines:
"Bypass (pressure relief) valve. Ford prefers to have the bypass valve at the base end of the filter. Many filter manufacturers prefer to place it at the dome end. The dome end location is cheaper and easier to manufacture. However, for filters with dome end bypass valves, if the filter goes into bypass mode, the oil will circulate past the dirty side of the filter before passing through the bypass valve, and back into the engine. I believe that this may result in the oil picking up additional contaminants and returning them to engine (besides not having been filtered at all). I prefer base end bypass valves. It is also important to have a bypass valve that opens at the correct pressure differential."

Only the Motorcraft and Ford Racing oil filters have bypass valve at the base end of the filters... all other filters, Wix, Mobil 1, K&N have them at the dome end. Now Ford is cheap and it's cheaper to have the bypass at the dome end of the filter... Ford must really have a good reason to make all their filters have it at the base end.

Here is a link comparing filters for our 4.6 DOHC, very informative:

Yeah, I run the K&N filter... for some reason it's easier to find... though I've never looked for it at Wal-Mart. :p hahaha

That cracks me up... the guy with a 'new' vette...

  • Is selling his pristine Mark VIII,
  • Considers buying a hybrid,
  • Complains of the price of gas,
  • Buys his oil filters at Wal-Mart.

Only in America. :D

I'd shop at Walmart if they had one around here... hell will be frozen before they will allow a walmart in my county.

Sice were getting side tracked :)

-Yes, I am sad to see it go but I want something different after having Mark VIIIs for 7 years. I still have the deepest respect for these cars.
-No I am not considering a hybrid but I spent $500 on gas last month and that is a good amount of money.
-Yes because we are being ripped off in california more so than the rest of the nation.
-So?! lol I buy all my automotive fluids etc at wal-mart. Why? Because they are the same brands that get marked up by 20% more at other places. I also buy my oil from Costco sometimes.
