LS inside details

Hi all,

I just discovered the forum tonight on my search for some modern updated info on the people's recent experience with the 2000/2001 model year of the LS.

I normally drive an H3, which I love, and had an internship at FMC right around 2000 when the 2000 LS came out. Coming off of 3 Altimas and an SE-R, I'm missing a car. I'm thinking about buying a 2000 LS V8 as an around town and to work car, not spending a lot on one.

Are there particular model years that were known as good, or bad, or particular failures of particular years? For example, through my altimas forum I learned that 02 Altimas had crank shaft position sensor issues, 03's had radio issues, etc. etc.

If anyone has a "well seasoned" view of the 00 - 03 model year just from spending a lot of time on here, I would appreciate your input. I'm not looking to spend a lot, so I'm looking at higher miles, and am looking for a somewhat fun car to drive to work and not worry too much about dings & dents.

I apologize for such a long question. I have a buddy who has a 2000 LS that he's considering selling soon to get his wife a new car, and I've always liked the LS, but I don't feel well informed enough to know the ins & outs of LS, overall.

Any replies greatly appreciated!

The LS can have a multitude of problems. Overall i would not consider them the most reliable cars.

You will have valve cover gasket problems.
You will have COP problems (ignition parts).
A lot of ball joint/front suspension problems.

Some will also experience transmission problems. As with any car the newer the better. The 03+ got some nice motor/exhaust upgrades that added a bit of power i believe.

If you want a great all arounded i would get a towncar. They are VERY easy to service, cheap to insure, probably the most reliable car you can get in that class.

Can I get a Amen! :D

AMEN!! ;)

Edit: I looked once at the LS model and concur... the '03's and up were the ones to look for. But an earlier model with a proven maintenance history may be very attractive if the problems have been already accounted for or it has high enough mileage to be considered immune.

hey i'm new here, but not so new to my 2000 Lincoln LS V8.

anyways he couldn't have said it better, valve cover gaskets, cop's, then there is a bunch of little things like the window regulators headlights and taillights fogging up, and the occasional transmission issue, seems its either solenoids or valve body if there is any tranny issue. i would say 06 is best and 02 would be next best. i have heard a lot of cases concerning 03 plus ls' having leaky valve cover gaskets and coil problems. just my .02 cents
