Mark VIII Water Pump

Is there a really big difference in water pumps? I see them for sale on Ebay for 30-40 bucks while they are from 90-130 from FLM. Is there a reason to purchase one from a FoMoCo dealer rather than elsewhere?

OEM water pumps are the best quality. The 99 Cobra ones used to be the ones to get but Ford recently came out with one updated water pump for most 4.6's and it will work in the Mark VIII. I installed a cheap Kragen water pump in my 95 LSC and it started leaking 1 year later, after that 99 Cobra water pump and no problems.

Avoid remanufactured water pumps. I suspect that to be the case with the $30-$40 ebay specials. That's one of the benefits of the modular motor - more parts availability with less inventory.

I have never had a waterpump fail on my Ford engine, so I would go with OEM quality, they last for a long long time. I can't say the same for BMW waterpumps with PLASTIC impellers...

Napa sells NEW ones, and we've had good luck with them at my shop. Maybe eBay sells the NEW ones? Ask Unity....I think the Aviator one is better than the Cobra one, or maybe the Marauder?

F6AE-8505AA This is the part number from Max at 5 Star. Is it the right one? Also, I guess I should confirm it's the pump. Weird whining noise from front of engine. NOT weeping water tho...

Like everyone said, new OEM is best. I picked up a 1999 Cobra one for about $60 new from Torrie - I think... :) fastpartsnetwork.com

Aviator one is suppose to be better, but I know one person had fitment issues with getting the bell pulley on - the pump nose was too shallow. Maybe it was the wrong pump, I dont know, but the 99 Cobra is proven to work and honestly between the 99 and Aviator is almost nothing.

But you whining sound, good chance its not the water pump if its not leaking. Best to take the belt off and spin everything by hand - you may not hear anything doing this, but you should feel something. My guess is alternator or and idler pulley - maybe even the tensioner.

Locate the sound for sure before you buy stuff you dont need.

Waterpump is NOT likely to make a whining noise Bud, I'd suggest investing in a stethascope to get a 100% for sure of whats noisy, but like Unity suggested...pull the bell and spin the pullies. Most likely its a tensioner/idler pulley or ever the alternator :D

This is where I was when the site went down today...so, AGAIN: OK, I disengaged the belt and spun all the pullies (pully's ?). I couldn't feel/hear anything bad on any of them...Re-set the belt and, guess what? Noise went away. Guess the trip to upstate NY tomorrow will tell me if it comes back. See ya all Sunday night!!

The waterpump won't ever make a whining noise....thats what I was getting at!

It'll make a growl/howling, but definitally NOT a whining :)

I wonder if the belt was off-track, let us know how it turns out!

Oh, and if your water pump makes a meowing sound, then get concerned. Whining, complaining and barking are all ok....
