how can I make my Mark 8 go faster?

I have a 98 mark 8 with 125,000 and I would like to find out if I can make it go faster than it does. Can I put a supercharger in it, or is there no room? Open to suggestions and your help is appreciated.

gears, high stall converter, and chip/tune are the best bolt ons as well as exhaust. You can use a supercharger kit for a 99 Cobra and with minor modifications it will work on your 98.

I think the best thing is to get a supercharger... and supporting mods, like air fuel delivery. I would not do gears or stall converter if I had to do it again. The car becomes more of a gas hog with higher gears. At current times that directly translates into your wallet.

I say just try to get as much power as possible.

Thanks for the responses guys. I guess I will start saving for a supercharger and see how that goes. I know I can search the internet but does anyone advise of a place to go and get one? I live out in California near San Diego.

Well good luck with the mods then... It is very hard finding a smog legal supercharger.

Unless you got a hook-up at the local smog station I suggest you don't modify the engine.

Get a chip first, you can tune it later as needed. A chip tune is an AWESOME upgrade and helps free up the power you already have. DO IT! :)

Jeff....you want to do minor or major mods? How much power to you wish to achieve....like where is your goal?

First and foremost....make sure you vehicle is properly maintained. Spark plugs, coil boots, fuel/air filters, SeaFoam treatment and you oil change.

Next your cheapest upgrades....

Remove your air silencer
Get a K&N or conical/cold air filter http://mark8.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=15124

Go to your local muffler shop and have them remove the resonator(and mufflers if you like it loud) and get custom exhaust

Next step would be to move onto the more "expensive" stuff...

Chip $300
Gears $1000(to do it right which includes a new driveshaft)
Stall converter $500(plus labor $350)
Supercharger $3500+

My goal was to make my car one of the fastest street cars around and in order to accomplish this I had to make it faster than my old Mustang 5.0 which ran 13.5's.

I'm a mechanic so I'm able to say a HUGE amount of money because all I have to do is buy parts and install them myself.

Due to the extreme weight of our cars, its hard for simple bolt on's to get our cars going, but I highly recommend gears and a chip. If you're going to get gears, go with 4.10's all the way.....don't waste your time on anything elso. Like Unity said...get a chip NOW, I have an SCT 4 bank chip which allows me to switch between 4 different tunes. Being a 98, you also have the option of getting a programmer.

I have...

4.10 gears
3200 stall converter
SCT 4Bank Chip
Kooks Headers
Full custom exhaust
and removed air silencers

Look around...you'll see stuff you like and go from there....check out my cardomain if you want to get some "visuals" of the upgrades.

And if thats not fast enough. Remove the rear view mirrors and rear brakes. That will reduce drag - and with a chip, the speed limited is removed. You could top out at about 170 mph :)

I'd put my money on what J advised or-----------move to a place where you don't have to worry about the smog nazis. With those guys your options are really limited.

The did it in the salt flats with the "Bonneville" M8.

It didn't have stock gearing. I think they moved them down to 2.73. That car was a lot more modified than people think... Some guy bought it a few years back and posted pictures of it.

We also had an engineer chime in who worked on the project. I think the transmission temps went as high as 280F I hope whoever bought the car changed the fluid .

No the gear ratio they used was higher than even 2.73's... that car didn't accelerate well it was all top end, and I believe the car hit 181mph?

I've done the research - Vortech and Kenne Bell both make CARB certified superchargers. If you get the right model and get it installed correctly, you'll have no problem. When any cop or smog inspector questions the unit, showing them the CARB certificate or the CARB number stamped directly on the unit will appease them. It is illegal for them to harass you any further.

showing them the CARB certificate or the CARB number stamped directly on the unit

Thats all you need to be "smog legal". I'm sure the kits are out there...they wouldn't sell them if they weren't cali legal.
