97 LSC Tranny Flush

Hi All,

I recently bought a 97 LSC, w/76k miles and in great shape. I changed the plugs, boots, coil springs in the COP's and replaced 2 coil packs too. OBD II can be a good thing.

I'm looking to have the tranny serviced. Nothing wrong and the fluid looks good and doesn't smell burnt but wish to be proactive about maintenance. I stopped by a LM dealer and the service manager recommended a tranny flush as he said it will removed all old fluid and put in fresh fluid. I asked about changing the filter and he said it wasn't necessary.

Anyone have good luck with just a tranny flush vs having the fluid drained, filled, and filter replaced?

Thanks for your time,
John

John,

Congrats on your new Mark VIII. I would suggest changing the filter out as well. As it is probably still original. The transmission flush actually takes care of more fluid than a drain and refill of the entire transmission, but the filter gets neglected as well as the dirty magnet inside the transmission pan. Preferably those items should be cleaned every 30k miles.

This is fairly simple job you can do yourself. I would recommend just purchasing 12 quarts of mercon V and doing the job yourself.

The system holds up to 16qts....performing this at home will only leave you mixing old/new fluid. I would recommend either paying the extra to have them change the filter(not necessary? what are they thinking? Oh....they are thinking, if we don't change the filter, he'll come back here when his trans fails from all the crap plugging the filter), or changing out the filter yourself, adding 5 qts of atf and taking it in for the flush.

Ask for Mercon 5 and get it flushed.

See the flush machine..... http://mark8.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=15269
