Jmod, HP levels and separator plate ?

You can use the purolater filter it's just as good as the Motorcraft but it has to be for a 96-98 Mark VIII which came stock with the deep dish pan.

Ah, who am I kidding, I was floppin’ around in that oily mess like a fish.

Haha, awesome visual! :D

Glad you're able to do this yourself....pulling the stock pan and dealing with the constant dripping fluid is NEVER fun!

As far as the deep filter goes.....it should look EXACTLY the same as the stock one, with the exception of a metal "tube" sticking down from where the inlet in the bottom of the filter is. Wait......you have a Gen 2, you probably already had the deep pan filter, haha. :D My bad, I was imagining mine.

Looks good man, and congrats on the positive results. The mixture of M3 and M5 will NOT damage the transmission, the fluid won't perform like a full M5 swap, but it will be fine. The best recommendation I have is to get it flushed/exchanged with a machine, and you'll get a full 16 qt M5 swap.

Yup, that's the one I got! Cool, I guess Im ok.

You're good to go. Like I said...I was thinking about my car and it came with a normal pan instead of the deep pan. Either way....its the same filter used in all the 4r70w transmissions. The other ford trans use the same filter, but it has a different seal that has different widths than the one you used.

New Mark VIII owner here Couple of questions regarding trans. I have a 98 LSC 37000 miles as far as I know nothing has been done to the car, Do I need to do changes to accumalator, I get the impression that is not a problem on 98. So is just a Mercon V flush the best to start with or as long as I have the pan off should I do the JMod. One more question is a K&N air filter the way to go I have been reading that these cars seem to be sensitive to Mass air changes, some mention as well of drilling holes in the airbox. I did not see any tech articles on this.
Finally is there anyone in my area (Burbank CA) that can help or point me in the direction of a good mechanic, prefer to do most of my own work but having someone that knows what they are doing is nice.

Thanks Rich

Rich B... welcome to the Board.

The 98 already has the improved 1-2 accumulator and Mercon V from the factory.

I would recommend a complete flush of the transmission fluid, or a drain and refill with a transmission filter change.

I would also install a transmission cooler.

K&N isn't going to give you any extra power just stick with the stock airbox/filter.

You're in so-cal... most of us guys are here in Nor-Cal. Maybe someone else can direct you. These cars are pretty easy to work on compared with others out there... so finding a good tech shouldn't be to hard. But most will still try to brain wash you into their own "opinions". Like using wrong types of transmission fluid etc.

Thanks for the info on the trans that is what I will do.
I did notice on the tech page it was recommended to bypass the radiator when installing the cooler? less heat from the coolant? Would more BTUs be better or does the space available dictate the size?

As long as I am asking ?s is the 2.5" exhaust the ticket I would like the added performance, but my main interest would be getting a nice exhaust note.

Thanks Rich

I would go with a 20-30k cooler on stock Mark VIII. I would go with a 40k cooler if you have gears/converter and live in a hotter climate.

The ticket to exhaust performance is removing the 3rd cat and the giant mufflers. Also going with a true dual exhaust is what adds power... not the change in pipe diameters.

The most power from the exhaust is going to be achieved by:

2-New headers, (kooks)
2-High flow cats,
true dual exhaust out back.
High flow mufflers.

I know of an honest top notch tranny guy that does not overcharge in North Orange county if you are willing to travel that far.

PM me if you are interested.

Doesn't the LSC have the true dual?

37K wow! Tell us more, and welcome.
I do not have any idea on the duals Any idea where I would begin looking into that?
The car was owned by a couple in San Diego, between them they had fourteen cars. This included two Mark VIIIs,the others were a wide range 55 T Bird 57 Bel Aire you get the idea. Sadly he died recently and they were to much for her alone. She has two cars left a stunning 2002 red T Bird with 5000 miles on it. If only I had more garage space.
The LSC I bought is in excellent condition red with beige interior the only thing that does not work on the car is the blend door, which your web site has the answers to.THANKS I also used your FAQ section when I was looking for a Mark again thanks.
