8's in the doors?

Pauls dropped 8

im sure ive spoken to a few folks on here about this but my memory sucks. i wanna know if anyone has fit 8" speakers in their doors. i have 7's in there now but havent yanked the panel off to see if im anywhere near any clearance issues. i just bought some 8's that are closing in on 4.5" deep and im wondering if baffles would be enough to keep these from hitting the windows all while fitting behind the door panel. lemme know folx.

RE: 8's in the doors?

I have heard of at least one person with 10's in the doors. There is the width, but depth is definalty an issue. WHen I had my rainbow's in the doors, they had around 6 mm of xmax, and they would hit the door panel. My baffle was a piece of very thin steel. There isn't much room to play with. I had to trim all the plastic from the back of the door panel.

I would definalty be looking into some super shallow 8's maybe the kicker RMB8? With enough trimming, and a good HPF set around 60 Hz you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

EDIT: Oops, just re-read your post, you already bought some. What did you get?

hope this helps.

RE: 8's in the doors?

Nope they will hit the windows. You can stick them in there, and never roll the window down. My dynaudio 7" are the maximum depth you can shoehorn in there. They scrape the window every now and again.

RE: 8's in the doors?

I have some 8"s ready to go in. I'm custom fabbing the door panels for them tho. I think that they might just fit anyways. They are the kicker RMB 8 resolutions and seem to have a pretty slim profile

RE: 8's in the doors?

ive got the same 7's joe and mine dont rub. i may cut the door panel but i may just sell the 8's and pick up some morel mw116's (i think thats what theyre called). those morel's are great for in-door use and are even more shallow than the kickers.

i went to a shop in town here called "sounds incredible" to demo ppi's dcx subwoofer. this place sells helix which blew me away. dont know why i mentioned the helix stuff. while i was listening to the ppi's they had a set of focal k2 components playing with them and i was more impressed with the midbass coming from the 6.5's than the subs i was hearing. they flat out had more output in their frequency range than any of the subs had in theirs, period. over on another forum for car audio i frequent, there was a guy selling some older focal kevlar 8's and i couldnt pass them up. they will be replacing the dyn 7's which ill probably be selling.

i also picked up some morel wr4's (4" midranges). im gonna pick up a ppi 480 (4x80) to power my tweet/mids separately from the midbass speakers which will probably get my ppi 2125 on their own. im gonna eliminate the passive crossovers and use the ones on the amps for the time being till i get and active crossover. ill test the dyns on the 480 along with the morels. im more than likely gonna sell the dyns except for the tweeters (best tweeter ive ever heard) and use the morels and the focals in their place.

im also gonna eliminate the dead-pedal for some space for kicks. id like to make a new panel right next to the e-brake to house the tweets/mids but no matter how i look at it, the brake will smack them. eliminating the dead-pedal will give me more room to push them back further to help minimize localizing (along with proper aiming of course).

this all probably wont happen for a while except for me replacing the 7's with the 8's. im gonna do that right away. i still have the matter of retrofitting some driving lights into my headlights so i can see in this town that has no street lights.

RE: 8's in the doors?

the midbass from the 7" dyn's did leave me wanting more. Even with a ton of power on them they just do not perform as well as i think they should. I do not know if it was due to a lack of proper installation on my part or what the deal is. I sealed the door off as best as possible, since i did not have room for an enclosure. Don't get me wrong they wound great, but just not as punchy as I would like.

RE: 8's in the doors?

IN about 3 weeks, RE will release their XXX motor'ed 6.5 midbass. The SQ of a XXX, Xmaz somewhere between 13-20mm, I can't remember exactlty. You may want to wait and see how these perform.

BTW, how is your ED working? Have you seen the video of the new sub ED is working on? No more flat cone, but I've heard 4+ inches of throw...:)

RE: 8's in the doors?

i was considering some of the RE's but theyll likely be an expensive treat and what im getting will be plenty for my tastes. my eD is awesome. i love this sub. ive got it in a ported box now and its great. ive lost a little in the upper frequencies because of the box but im gonna have the cutoff around 50-65 hz (about 78 now) when i get these new 8s so that should take care of things. havent heard of the new eD yet. is it a new version of the A or are they going beyond that? i knew they were done with the flat cone cuz of costs and manufacturers but i didnt know they were able to get so crazy with their excursion.

quick question. would your leg if extended to the dead-pedal get in the way of a kick pod that was built just below the hood latch? im 6'2 and have the seat all the way back and i know it would get in the way but im wondering if it would affect the sound so much. i know if i built it in the place i mentioned earlier, the only thing that would get in the way is the stearing wheel but id lose my dead-pedal and thats where my foot spends most of its time.

anybody? joe, where are yours placed?

RE: 8's in the doors?

It would definaltly hamper sound for mids and highs. Midbass is slightly more omnidirectional so the effect wouldn't be *as* noticible, but it's definatly there. I noticed a difference between having the 6.5's in the doors compared to in a pod, the door seemed to block a bit of sound. However, after I'm done installing the V-10 I'll probably put them back in the doors when I remake the new door panels. The pod isn't giving me a deep enough response, (although i can suddenly feed them a crap load more power which was nice...:) gotta love sealed enclosures.
