A/C Problem

My A/C doesn't want to get cold when it's sunny and hot outside. The blend door needs replacing, but I've been adjusting it manually and that is working fine for now. I don't think it's a coolant issue as it gets really cold when the weather is not too hot (and at night). It also seems to blow colder when the car is sitting still. Giving it any gas makes it warm up again. Anyone got any ideas what's going on?

RE: A/C Problem

Most likely low on refridgerant? Have the AC checked at a competent repair shop.

RE: A/C Problem

I agree with JP on this. Same thing happened in my old mark viii. I brought one of those do it at home test kits from walmart and it was low. Added a can and all was good after that. Does your compressor kick on and off alot? If it does I would have the refridgerant checked.

RE: A/C Problem

Mine is shot too, but there is a leak somewhere so the system is full of air, about $100 to fill with ref. and dye to find the leak, then whatever price to fix the leak, then the price of a refill after that. I've been holding off for three years, hopefully it's another mild summer....

RE: A/C Problem

I recently noticed that my A/C would cycle on and off fairly rapidly -especially when at idle. I figured that it was low on 134-a again, so I bought a can to refill it. Surprisingly, when I put the gauges on it, the system already was on the edge of being overfilled!

In blowing off the excess pressure, I managed to let some air in the system. After that, my compressor wouldn't kick on at all. I surrendered and took the car in to a local shop. One new A/C cycling switch and a full evac and refill, and all is chilly again. (Total cost = $180)

RE: A/C Problem

I don't notice the compressor doing anything weird, but maybe I'm not hearing or feeling it. It seems like it will try to get cool for a minute and then go back to not so cool.

RE: A/C Problem

As far as the "cycling" goes, you can either watch your RPMS go up and down, or you can watch the compressor clutch engage and disengage. To view the cycling in action, turn the AC on "max", open your hood, and watch the lower left-hand (passenger) side of the motor. If the compressor is cycling, you should see something spinning and then not spinning..and then spinning and not spinning.

If you see a sort-of triangular piece of metal down there that is not spinning, your compressor is not running.

RE: A/C Problem

Thanks. I'll check the compressor function and the refrigerant. I'm gonna be P.O.ed if this thing isn't working or I have a leak. I had $600 worth of work done on the A/C system last summer. Evidently the previous owner neglected the car pretty badly and allowed a lot of rust to build up. My A/C guy told me when he started taking things apart some of the pieces were so badly rusted that they crumbled in his hands. I love this car but it's turning into a money pit!

RE: A/C Problem

Okay...the compressor was kicking on and off about every 2 seconds, so I checked the pressure. It was a little low (down around 25 on the gauge). I added a bit...until the compressor stopped kicking on and off and it felt pretty cold. Then when I drove it later it wasn't staying cold. So I checked it again this morning. Now the compressor is staying on for about 10 seconds and going off for about 3. I check the pressure again and it's at about 35. So I add the rest of the can. Now the compressor is staying on and it feels cold, but the gauge is reading back down around 25 again. I'm stumped. I'm going to drive it in a bit and see if it's staying cold.
