Aftermarket Radio Drains Battery

I installed a new Pioneer Cassette Player CD Controller from Crutchfield in my '93 when the old Ford radio malfunctioned and I couldn't find one to replace it.
Shortly afterward, the battery would drop to about 11.6 volts after about three days of not driving and the car wouldn't start. I had the alternator checked out because the battery would go dead over night due to a bad diode. The alternator was replaced last summer. The alternator checked out fine. A co-workers husband told me that sometimes, a radio clock can cause the battery to drain. Since this started shortly after replacement, I removed the radio fuse and let the car sit for 4 days. The car started right up. I used the Crutchfield Installation kit so the radio would plug into the factory wiring harness.
Anyone know of a fix for this besides a battery tender?
