Do not buy rebuilt alternators at pep boys for mark VIII. I have a 95 mark VIII and was left stranded by pep boys alternators finally had to have mark towed to the dealer where I was stung for 600.00 bucks!!!!!! Its a nightmare when bad parts are sold.

RE: alternator replacement

I bought mine brand new from the Lincoln dealer for $220. Took maybe 15 minutes to R&R and I was back on the road. Haven't had a problem since, even with two compressors and a sub amp pulling (an estimated) 60-70 amps at times. It's been almost two years since it was replaced.

RE: alternator replacement

Very interesting...Though I have never had occassion to change the alternator on my Mark (watch, now it'll die soon) I have always used Pep Boys alternators on my other cars. No problems at all. On my 87 Grand Prix (305 V8) I once went out and bought a 120 amp Delco Corvette alternator for $200 something. Lasted only four months. Got another one on warranty. Lasted five months. Replaced it with a Pepboys unit ($85)...no problems. Right now my family has four Pep Boys alternators going for several years each with no problems.

RE: alternator replacement

Best way to handle alternator and starter problems is to find an independent shop that rebuilds in house. ask around and find one in advance of trouble, and also ask for one you can trust.

I've been using the same guy for several years on several years on several different vehicles. The last time it was on my '94 MK8, I think it was just before Christmas '01.

The owner/chief mechanic is an old timer like me and he is from the North GA Mtns. Another old timer, retired mechanic was there also for alt. repair.

We got to BS'ing about old times and "Shine" liquor. Next thing I knew the owner had disappeared, leaving his assistant repairing my alternator.

When the owner reappeared, he had a sack containing a quart fruit jar of "shine" that he made himself on a small stovetop still ar his home.
We passed it around, and it was truly fine stuff.

His assistant finished repairing my alt.' and my bill was like $40.

Now that's what I call real good value!

Needless to say I left happy {and with a buzz}!
