AM Radio Noise

I'm getting lots of AM radio noise when the lights are on. If I put on the brake, the noise goes away. Disconnect the alternate, noise is still there.

Any Ideas?

RE: AM Radio Noise

I had a similar problem with mine whenever the lights were on, but it'd change to a high-pitched whine when I applied the brakes. My neon light was going bad anyway, and after I replaced it, the noise was gone. Before you shell out dough on a new one, check its ground wire first. I believe it attaches to the trunk lid somewhere.

RE: AM Radio Noise

I took the rear light apart today. The ground was located just under the rear trunk cover. My ground was fine but... when I removed the light assembly I found a second ground attached to the ballast for the rear light. This ground had never been completely screwed down and was very rusted. This screw held the ground for the ballast as well as a “wire mess”.

I’m not sure what the wire mess is for. I removed the screw, cleaned everything up and reinstalled it. I’m hoping this was my problem. I also noticed that since the screw had never before been completely tightened, it was rubbing a hole in the trunk where it was hitting the trunk lid.

I’ll find out in the next week or so if this was my problem. Hopefully it is!

RE: AM Radio Noise

Sounds like a very good candidate for your problem. Let us know if that fixed it. If you're talking about the wire MESH, I believe it has several purposes. It hangs below the neon tube and acts as a "cushion" to keep the neon light from shattering if the trunk is closed too hard, and it acts as a diffuser for the light to shine down. It could have something to do with the ground too, I don't know. Glitch would probably know for sure. Someone posted his email address recently in this forum I think.

RE: AM Radio Noise

The noise went away for a day or so, but...came back. So...I removed the neon light and crimped lugs onto the wire mess, as opposed to it just being looped around the screw.

As an added precaution, I also ran a new ground from the ballast ground to the ground inside the trunk lid.

Now if this doesn't fix it, nothing will! So far, so good.
