anyone use a horn setup?

i was thinking that since our marks have limited footspace and short of remaking the door panels u pretty much need kickpods for proper speaker staging. horns eliminate this all-together and u need less speakers for the setup. instead of going with the popular 3 way component set, all youd need is a pair of horns and a set of good midbass speaker and theres your front stage.

has anyone used horns in our cars? is it hard to properly set these up, and if so, is it worth the trouble? ive heard people preach the gospel when it comes to horns and just wonder if our cars would benefit from them.

Have you ever heard or heard of the Klipsch Klipschorn line? These are arguably some of the best home audio speakers available, and they havent changed their design since the 50's. Anyways, they sound amazing, and if you could get that set up done 'right' in a car, i would be VERY impressed, and im sure you would be very happy.

RE: anyone use a horn setup?

sure. I haven't even looked into the horn set-up for cars, I have no idea what is available. All I know is that those things are pretty dang expensive in general. How much does that ID set up look like its going to run?

RE: anyone use a horn setup?

ive seen them go from $200-600. my main reason for wondering is the space saving. i believe cal told me once that theyre hard to properly image and have to be set deep into the dash. we couldve been talking about anything though, this was a while ago.

RE: anyone use a horn setup?

they are very dynamic but also very directional, and in a small space, such as a car, i bet they would be pretty hard to image. The price surprises me, i would have figured they would be more.

Horns can give you one hell of a soundstage when used properly. Horns are excellent at giving a very wide stage, although not always a high one. The big problem with horns is that they tend to break up at around 15KHz, so most competitors will add tweeters that play above that to smooth out the top end. Horns are also very effecient, it doesn't take a lot of power to get them loud.

A good EQ will be neccesary with horns, as they can be a little peaky depending on the "mouth" of the horn.

I talked to cal once about them and he doens't care for them, but everyone has their own opinion, and cal is not god. Some judges like the sound they give, some don't. If you go that route, don't have him judge your car :)

There is a man by the name of winslow on termpro.com who is the resident on horns. You can emial him for more info, he is defintaly the horn man. ;-)

i always heard about their tendency to roll off at those freqs and that they tend to make a low soundstage so i was thinking of having the horns play their sweetspot and give the low soundstage but add tweets in the factory tweet location for the freqs they cant hit and to raise the soundstage as well.
