Bad Leak

I noticed some smoke coming out of the hood from the mark today. I got home and opened the hood and i found a big leak. I believe it is power steering fluid but it could be tranny fluid. It is red in color but i am pretty sure it is the power steering. It isnt coming from either of the power steering hoses, but i can see where it is coming out. I am not sure how best describe it so i took a pic. This area is below the power steering reservoir. You can see the fluid in the pic. Sorry for the lack of detail but i am not sure what this thing is called. Please help me identify what this unit is that has 3 hoses going into it. One top, one bottom, and one side. I am letting everything cool down before i try to get in there.

That looks more like where the fluid is landing, but NOT what's leaking. Bet it is a PS line. Put more fluid in and have someone turn the steering wheel lock to lock while you look.

i ran out of ps fluid and cant drive to the parts store for more.... The reservoir still has some fluid in it, so i can try a little. I dont want to run it dry in fear if killing the pump. I will go look and update here shortly.

So i started the mark back up and looked for the source of the leak. I saw a stream shooting from somewhere. So i tried to move the power steering lines from the reservoir and one of them literally snapped off the reservoir. I didnt even pull on it that hard. Then came the power steering fluid raining like a volcano. I shut off the car and EVERYTHING was covered in ps fulid. It even went all over the bumper and grill. Sooo after a good amount of time of cleaning up i went back at it. Well obvously i cant start the car again until i repair the reservoir. So i pulled both of the lines that go to the reservoir and found a small crack in the larger line near the top of the reservoir, just below where the hose clamp sits. That is the only crack i could find and i hope that is what was causing the leak. Its just hard to believe it was leaking that badly from that small of a crack. I know the hose is under pressure but still. It is too late for me to get over to NAPA so i will have to go tomorrow. I modified the reservoir and am using some jb weld to try to fix it until i can get another. That reminds me.... i need to contack Jamie, lol. What really gets me is when i was driving earlier i was thinking how nice it was that i have not had to wrench on it for a while. :fart

the part with the hoses is your thermostat housing. the ps pump uses ATF in it thats why it looks like tranny fluid because it is. check both hoses on the bottom of the res can and see if either are leaking, check the can itself too, its only plastic i have seen a few crack in the past.

edit: i just read your last reply!!! i have two cans on my work bench i just removed both from two diff motors, you need one?

Damn that sucks, I picked you up 4 lug nuts from the junkyard if you still need them.
Yes it do, Thanks Jarrod!:D I was actually going to email you about bringing up that rear diff to you.... but now that will have to wait until it get this fixed. I should have it done tomorrow. Let me know what your schedule is looking like for this week.

Jesse, that would be great since i can go to his house and pick it up. Check it out for me and let me know!

Ok, so I drove up there real quick and I couldn't find one.........

Lol! My dad isn't home yet but I'll ask him when he calls. Apparently he filled the shed up with a bunch of junk so I'm not sure whats going on there.

I saw your train horns in there last time:D
I was going to ask if you wanted to part with them but i noticed on another thread you plan on keeping them. Let me know if he can find the reservoir, if not i will get one from Jamie.

I can use ATF when i refill the ps reservoir cant I? Or would it be better to use actual PS Fluid? I have a bottle of lucas i am going to add to it also.

The manual calls for Mercon III you can use Merc V also.

I have also used the PS fluid but it seems quite a bit thicker.

No way you're getting my horn kit (unless you got 500 bucks)! My dad looked and no dice...I must have tossed it when I sold my Mark. :( Sorry!

ATF and some lucas sounds great, it will quiet the pump a bit too.
