Bubbling trim around Drivers window Gen 2

My Mark has had this bubbling (rust coming up) trim on the driver's side door for some time. Its bad and I really need to get this fixed. Is this a do-it-yourself fix or something that's best left to a body shop? If it is a do-it-yourself, anyone have part numbers for these trim pieces?
I'm afraid to poke at it because it may get angry with me.... :p

Thanks!

Here are some pics:

And you can see how much this really comes up in this picture:

Pardon the pics, they are off my phone. The easiest way for me to get pics on here.

Wow! Well, you know I had a slight problem with that and it was replaced under my warranty. It's come back. It must be a horribly weak spot on the gen 2s although mine is nowhere near that bad.

You also have the option of repairing the same strip yourself...if the rust hasn't eaten all the way through the metal. You would grind the rust off using a dramel down to bare metal. If you have some small holes in the metal, you can fill it with Bondo and repaint. Being black, you shouldn't have problems with color matching. Since it appears that it is caused by water access to the backside, you may need to remove it and paint the backside as well, though I'm not sure how easy it is to remove.

I remember seeing another Mark with the same problem, so I knew I wasn't the only one Sharon. Being 11 years old, I'm probably going to find more.... :(

There seems to be a rubberized strip over the rust, I guess I would have to scrap/pull that off to expose the rust and sand it off. Then do as you suggested and repair. But where would I get the replacement rubberized strip? Would the dealer even have that or am I left to search the bone yards?

Oh...I didn't see that that was rubber...my mistake. I thought it was paint. In that case, you might be better off replacing it...if possible.

It should be part of some sort of weather stripping in the window. Talk to Jamie, he may be able to remove it on some of the doors he sends to the scrap yard.

i already have one off from someone who begged me to remove it for him, so i did, then he never called back, he had to have it sooooooooooooooooooooo bad , sure........

anyway, its a pain to change, you have to take the door panel off, put your window down, and unbolt it from the door shell, the front part runs deep down into the door sheel and it bolted in, then it goes up and around the top of the window opening and back down inside the door and is bolted in again. its almost the size of the door itself. i have seen that happen to plenty of them but yours might be the worst one! i'll have to see if i still have it i can send you a pic and show you the sheer size of it, it is metal with rubber over it. if i dont have the one i already took out, i have two 97's in my shop right now one of them should be nice still but shipping might kill you.

I sold both sides and a header panel to a guy for $100... he was all stoked to fix up his Mark... called me back a week later asking if i had anymore of the weather stripping cause he bent it trying to put it in lol...

Nice to know I have the record for worst one! LOL I think it was a small bubble when I bought it about 7 years ago. Definitely, let me know how much shipped to 60638.
Would I need any special tools or have to break any rivots? I hate coming across weird bolts that make me rush to the parts store or sears for a tool.

From what Jamie wrote, sounds like its a daylong project for me. I've fixed a couple of things including blend door, the biggest thing is you need patience and time to work. If you are in a hurry or get frustrated, that's when things go bad. Thanks for the post, let's me know I should take my time and document my steps.

My red Mark has had that for years now, it's not just a gen 2 thing.

Sorry but yours is worse than mine too.:frown:

the one i had removed last year got thrown away my father in law said. the one on the car at my shop now is starting to do the same thing, if you want one, the next one i get in that is nice i will remove it, the problem will be shipping it, it cannot be bent or folded to make it smaller, it has to be shipped exactly as it is on the door, and that may cost a bit to ship since it will be oversized. i'll sell you the molding cheap, but even free might be exspensive!!

Can you possibly take a die grinder and cut the metal at one of the angles, just enough to fold the rubber section? Or is it rubber coated metal?

What about removing what you have on there, sanding it off, and taking it to get it Line-X'd or Rino Lined, or even painted gloss black?

Thanks for the input guys. Jamie, let me know when you get one and let me know the cost. I'm also going to take it to a body shop to see if they can suggest something. I'll post up with any info.

Resurrecting this thread... Manny, did you ever find a solution to this? I'm seriously considering a repaint this summer and the bubbling trim is going to ruin it (for me anyway). That, and the rear window seal. It's getting to the point that I'd be willing to pay any price to resolve it.

I tried for 2 years to find a solution to the rear window lasagna problem. I even went to hot rod shops that did custom work.. NOTHING.. Finally bit the bullet and had it replaced last week. OUCH!

Nope, its still there. I've started seeing bubbling on other spots so I think I may be facing a repaint which may be hard as I don't have money for a good paint job. :(

If you find out anything, post up. I'll do the same.
