I discovered an odd problem with my 98 CE. 95% of the time, it runs perfect -- idles smooth, smooth acceleration, etc. There are times, however, especially under load at light throttle (~1300RPM) where it seems like you cut off the ignition and it gives a single fairly violent "buck" -- it recovers and returns to normal a couple of seconds later.

It's been a long time since I had another Mark to compare to (last one was new in 97) -- but there's also a minor clunk when it happens (and occasionally on downshift when slowing down) almost like a mount.

Another interesting bit... I took it out last Sunday on the Blue Ridge Parkway in the mountains and it was VERY apparent at higher altitudes. I stopped at an overlook and although it idled perfectly at first, it just randomly died a few minutes later at idle. Upon restart, the CEL was on. It ran fine, then the higher I got, the more it cut off and bucked at light/moderate acceleration. It was much, much better once we returned to "normal" elevation. MAF? O2 sensor(s) (let's hope not... the thought of replacing four O2's makes me want to vomit.)

At only 16,000 miles - I don't have a clue as to what the underlying problem could be, but it has sat covered in a garage most of its life, so anything is possible. There's no codes and other than elevation, the symptom is relatively inconsistent.

Thanks for any help! :)

Thanks as always, guys. I think it is the MAF sensor, actually... I notice the original owner put a K&N filter in. It seems likely there was too much oil and it mucked up the sensor. I picked up some aerosol MAF cleaner and gave it a good cleaning. I'll test it out this weekend and let you know how it goes.

Thanks again!

Sorry I haven't updated this - I haven't driven it in a while to check out the results. I appreciate the help, JP and Bud - it was the MAF afterall. I cleaned it twice and it didn't make a difference, so I was ready to move on -- but a Lincoln tech said that if you get enough oil on them from the K&N, they sometimes can't be cleaned. I ordered one and replaced it, all is well!

I still have a small clunk occasionally when it downshifts. I can also feel a clunk sometimes when you let off the accelerator and then depress it again. It feels like it's coming more from the front/middle rather than the back.

Mount or u-joint? I had surgery not too long ago so I haven't been able to crawl underneath to check the u-joints.

That's the fist I've heard of a MAF sensor permanently damaged from oil, but I'm glad to hear you got it taken care of.

I would suspect the rubber mounts versus any u-joint with your mileage.

I did the powerbrake test and the left/driver's side of the engine lifts quite a bit, although I didn't notice the clunk when doing that.

I guess the motor mounts fail more often than trans?
