Center console ash tray cover

Hi all,

I've got a problem with my center console ash tray cover. I can push it down to close, but it keeps springing back up and will not latch. Any suggestions?

RE: Center console ash tray cover

Assuming you have a 2nd gen, I had what sounds like the same problem with mine. The plastic posts that the door rotates on have cracked and broken disengaging the gear spring/latch mechanism. I was able to repair mine by drilling through the posts and using a screw and nut. If you can find a used one, the door is replaceable if you remove the console. Not sure if these are available new from dealer as a separate item from the console.

RE: Center console ash tray cover

Its been a couple years since I did mine so can't be real sure about details but will try. Yes once you get a good visual on what is broke you can figure out the repair. I do recall using a 6x32 screw with a low profile head and used a little Loctite on the nut because if it is tightened it will bind the motion. Also remember keeping the broken piece in place as a spacer. If the broke piece is gone or shattered you can make a spacer out of something else. If you have some ability to innovate it will be fairly simple. I remember it was a bit of a pain though to get the spring back in properly. I fixed one side and about 3 months later the other side broke and I had to do it. Apparently the same engineer who designed the cup holder also designed the ash tray door. A little too much pressure applied by leaning on the ash tray cover will break the posts.
