So after a 500 plus mile beach trip, the Mark VIII began to have the notorious 4-3 shift shudder and a clicking in the back when going over bumps. So I got 12 quarts of Mobil 1 Mercon V, and went to my buddy's shop to use the lift so I can do a flush and figure out what is making noise. Aside from diagnosing the clicking to be coming from the shock mounts as I suspected, after a few hours (and burning the **** out of myself with old trans fluid), Mobil Mercon V was flowing through my trans. I put in 11 quarts using the half-half method, took the car out for a test drive and was AMAZED, SIMPLY BLOWN AWAY! I mean the thing shifts like NEW! I never had this car shift so smoothly and timely. Got back, checked the level, added another 1/2 quart, still have another half left over.
If you have a Mark VIII and you have not yet converted to Mercon V, DO IT NOW! You will NOT be disappointed! I prefer Mobil 1, that is all I ever use, but it is almost twice the price of stuff like Castrol and Valvoline, but it is WORTH IT! However, I'm sure even the cheaper stuff will make a difference, as long as it is Mercon V spec.
