Cooling Fan

My cooling fan won't shut off...I have tried everything I know (which isn't that much) removed every fuse/relay and it keeps running. Am told I need a Computer. Any and all help appreciated....thanks

Did you know it is supposed to run anytime the AC is on? Which by the way means almost every HVAC position except OFF.

No I didn't. My problem is it runs when the car is off and will not shut off. I have it unplug for now, but I know I will need soon. thanks

VCRM=Variable Control Relay Module

It powers the fuel pump as well as the cooling fan. It is a solid state device.

The VCRM is a brick sized finned module behind the grill in front of the radiator just to the drivers side of center.

I would bet a junkyard version is $20 or less. I have no clue what a new one retails for - but safe to say it ain't cheap coming from a dealer.

I've experimented with this.

The "Floor" and "Vent" functions do not cycle the AC comp.

"Flr/Pnl", "Auto", "Defrost" do cycle the AC comp.

Thanks, I couldn't remember if it was one or two positions it was off though I was sure it was on in "Auto" and "Defrost" and I didn't want to disseminate false information.

I also have a problem with my fan on my 94, but in my case it does not run at all, it has power to it. I hooked a wire to my positive battery and then to the green power wire on my fan and it ran fine. Would it possibly also be the VCRM?

My fan will not run at all. I put the climate control to floor and turned the temp to 90 degrees and no fan. I also put the climate control to A/C and same thing, no fan. How should I go about trouble shooting this starting with the easiest first?

Green?

The Light Blue wire is the positive feed to the fan from the VCRM. The black wire is ground. The third wire is unused.

Check the 40 amp Cooling Fan fuse in the engine compartment fuse box.

Are you talking about the cooling fan at the radiator or the blower fan in the passenger compartment for the heater and air conditioning?

If the latter, look HERE.

I'm referring to the fan at the radiator. I also checked all of the 40 amp fuses under the hood and they are fine. When I replaced fuse 19, I noticed a small spark as though it is under a load. Everything was off, nothing running, what would be drawing current on fuse 19?
What direction does the fan turn? I saw at Rockauto they sell replacement motors instead of purchasing the complete fan and shroud. In the event my fan does turn out to be bad, I want to check the direction of the motor before I buy.

Fuse 19(40A) in the Engine Compartment fuse box is Circuit 37 (Y) Fuse Panel Feed. Feeds: Instrument Panel Fuses; 6, 11.

Instrument Panel Fuse 6(15 Amp ATC) - Circuit 931 (O) Courtesy Lamps, Power Mirrors, Dome Switch, Electronic Door Lock Control, Memory Seats

Instrument Panel Fuse 11(15 Amp ATC) - Circuit 10 (LG/R) Stop, Hazard Lamps, Brake Pressure Switch

Look at the fan to tell the direction of the fan motor. The motor turns so air is drawn through the radiator into the engine compartment. When I replaced mine I was told to be certain the direction of the motor was correct... somewhere they changed direction for some reason.

It is a basic DIY project to replace the motor. Once the fan assembly is removed, remove the fan blade from the motor and drill out the rivets holding the motor. Then replace with the new motor using appropriate sized bolts and locking nuts.

Yes im sorry the Light Blue, all fuses are ok.

When my cooling fan motor went bad, I could wiggle the harness connector and make it come on, sort of.

Thanks driller. I'll check the leading edge of the fan pitch to determine the direction. I'm not having any electrical problems so I won't worry about the small spark I saw when I inserted the fuse. I was a bit concerned because the items you mentioned in reference to that particular circuit were not on and I couldn't see why there would be a current draw. I could see if the door was open and the courtesy light was on or if the brake pedal was depressed, etc.

All of my fuses are ok. If I un hook the harness from the fan and test it with a voltmeter I get 12 volts. If I plug it back in and start the car I put the neg from my volt meter to the pos blue wire to my fan and the pos from my volt meter to the pos on my battery and I get 12 volts. I put my heat on high and still nothing and I put my a/c on high and still nothing, but my system has no 134a in it because my condenser has a hole in it, could this be a problem because my compressor isn’t running? Thanks

my compressor isn’t running?

Ding ding ding :) Your cooling fan will NOT turn on in the "A/C" setting on the HVAC unless the a/c system is working properly. When the a/c compressor engages, the fan should kit on simultaneously.
